My Cpu is running extremely hot even on idle.

Hello Everyone. I just built myself a new gaming pc. I am using an I5 11400 with a b560m motherboard. My cpu temps are extremely high even though the pc is on idle. I am currently using a stock cooler but I was using a liquid cooler but it had some issues with high temps aswell so I swapped it stock cooler but I am still getting extremely high temps. Any help would be extremely appreciated, Thank you

Idle temps don't really matter. What are your temps underload? From the looks of your screenshot it looks like 97C underload which means I would check your thermal paste application and if you mounted the cooler properly. Make sure you didn't forget the small plastic on the cooler/CPU

Temps shoot to 100 if the cpu even gets to 30% usage. I doubled checked the paste seemed fine to me. The cooler is mounted properly as it doesn't seem lose or anything. Yep no plastic on the cooler. I don't know if the cpu has a plastic on it aswell tho. Didn't seem like it had one

Could you take pictures of the paste spread? The cooler might not be loose but uneven pressure or the wrong socket hardware could cause a cooler to be tightened all the way but still float or have a gap between the IHS and cold plate.

Using the Intel cooler?  If so they're designed to "just do the job".  On my 9700 I was using a stock cooler.  Like you I saw the temps hit 98C at times.  The fans simply kick up and I'm sure the cpu throttles down a little to not burn up.

 

I installed a liquid cooler for $55 and it has never hit above 70C even under the heaviest load.  I also leave it at full throttle all the time.  Never hit above 70C.

The choice is yours.  Either way stock cooler is "just ok".

I definitely didn't want to use my stock cooler 😕, but my liquid seems to have some issues with that's why I decided to use the stock cooler so I could atleast troubleshoot 😅
