Keychron K4

Keychron C1: TKL Layout (87 Keys, No Numpad), Plastic Frame, Double-Shot ABS Keycaps, Detachable USB Cable.

  • Available in hot-swappable or soldered variants.
  • Available with no backlight, white backlight, or RGB backlight.
  • Equipped with Gateron Red (linear), Gateron Blue (clicky), or Gateron Brown (tactile) switches.
    • Switches may be easily swapped with aftermarket ones for hot-swappable keyboards.
    • Switches may still be swapped for soldered keyboards, so long as a soldering iron is within reach.
  • Standard bottom row is compatible with most aftermarket keycap sets.
  • Software/Firmware is locked to Keychron's stuff.

Corsair K68 RGB: Full-Sized Layout, Plastic Frame, Double-Shot ABS Keycaps, Non-Detachable USB Cable.

  • Available with RGB backlight.
  • Equipped with Cherry MX Red switches.
    • Switches are soldered into the board, and may still be swapped for other aftermarket ones, so long as a soldering iron is within reach.
  • Equipped with membrane layer between keycaps and mounting plate (More Info: Corsair K68 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review by TechPowerUp).
  • Equipped with dedicated media keys.
  • Non-standard bottom row is not compatible with most aftermarket keycap sets, due to the 6.5U Spacebar and odd 1.5U/1U Modifier keys.
  • Software/Firmware is locked to Corsair's CUE (Corsair Utility Engine).

Keychron K4 Version 2: 96%/Compact-1800 Layout (Full-Sized, Condensed), Plastic/Aluminum Frame, ABS Keycaps, Detachable USB Cable, Wireless Connectivity.

  • Available in hot-swappable or soldered variants.
  • Available in plastic frame or aluminum frame variants.
  • Available with white backlight or RGB backlight.

🤔

What keyboard form factor are you interested in or more familiar with, and are you interested in customizing your keyboard?

  • Keychron's an easy pick for custom keeb enthusiasts, assuming that people can find it in stock (either from Keychron's site or on Amazon).
    • If you've no need for the numpad, then the Keychron C1's a fair option.
    • If you'd like the conventional full-sized layout with the numpad, then consider the Keychron C2.
    • If you've like the full-sized layout with the numpad, but would like to same some desk space, consider the Keychron K4.
    • Whether you should pick the hot-swappable variant or not depends on whether you're interested in swapping the keyboard's switches out in the future.
  • Corsair K68 would be appealing for people already invested in the Corsair ecosystem (synced RGB?), or those that need extra features on their keeb within easy reach (e.g. media controls). Customizability with aftermarket parts will be quite limited (especially full keycap sets), however.
