M.2 SATA in M.2 NVME slot?

Hello, I recently ordered an m.2 sata ssd, although my problem would be my server motherboard does not have an m.2 slot, I looked for pcie to m.2 adapters but I saw m.2 nvme adapters instead of m.2 sata, this is my first time moving off of sata and ide, the m.2 nvme and m.2 sata seemed similar in size and how it connects, I'm wondering if an m.2 sata ssd can fit in an nvme, if not then would m.2 sata to sata slow down the drive, the m.2 sata I bought is 520mb/s.

If the adapter specifically says it supports both, then yes, but if it doesn't say that it supports both, then it won't.

No. SATA is SATA and M.2 is just the connector; an adapter would basically just pass the signal through as-is.

It connects to a PCIe slot, but for SATA SSDs you actually need to (also) connect it to a SATA port. It can also take an NVMe SSD which then uses the PCIe slot.

how old is your server?

if your intention is to boot from SSD, you may not be able to if it's very old

 

iirc before intel 4000, you cant boot from PCIE SSD

i don't deal with server hardware or am familiar with hardware older than intel 4000 series (which is when m.2 came out)

Pretty sure it can run it, chipset is Intel 5520, above 4000 series
