Nightmare that stuck with you?

Tehkast

What's the worse nightmare that you recall that has stuck with you that is beyond you're standard fear or loss of a loved one etc.

I sometimes have the naked in a public place but its never true naked  I always have my bed sheets with me to cover up but never really does the job and still feel exposed.

But

The nightmare that really sticks with me that just makes me freak out (30 years old) was a few months back.

So In the UK streets are rather tight in the cities so not much space around to play with I'm in my room and I look out the window to see Metal Gear Rex hunting down the street looking into windows, that horrible screech as it doesn't see what it clearly wants. I can't look away as you would expect when a 100 foot robot is farting it way down your road. I'm just peeking and it just notices and turns with a charge towards my window, ofc after I crap my pants I leave the room to go hide but then out the bloody back window as I leaving my room I see another bloody rex looking in the back window!

Woke in a pool of sweat and there is just something about the idea of giant bipetal robots that are now make them in my top 3 fears after spiders and boats out the water.

I tried to replay MGS5 the shahalanphrapus level its just stood there when not even moving I nearly had a panic attack I cannot enjoy that game again it just freaks me out.

What nightmares you guys got?

I don't have many dreams, and usually they're just a confusing mess of things that happened combined with things that didn't that I can semicontrol.

But the worst nightmare I've ever had was one I had after reading Inkheart.

It was most of the same plot about 15 times. I wake up, it's day, but it's eerily quiet and everyone's gone.

I'm in the bathroom, and I hear this van coming up the street. It's the generic white van that you can see basically everywhere in the US. It's driving down the street, and I hear laughter.

Suddenly, it stops about 500 feet from our house. Then it drives back up.

I just bolt from the bathroom, mostly jump down the stairs, and go to lock all the doors and windows. It takes awhile because there's a lot.

Now every door and window is locked and I go back upstairs and hide in my parents' closet. It's not very big and you can really hide if you go back far enough.

So I wait.

And wait.

And wait some more.

And then I hear a bang at the door.

It shakes a bit, then another bang. It sounds like someone's ramming themselves into the door.

Two more bangs, and it turns into a crash as the door falls down.
Then I hear people walking up the stairs. They go straight for the bathroom.

Except I'm not there.

So they search the entire top floor.

Eventually, they get to my parents' room.

They make their way through and end up at the closet. As they push their way in and are about to see me...

The dream resets.

Every time I get sick, like really sick, I have a nightmare that I'm looking into the corner of my room (corner of two walls and the ceiling), and then I start infinitely zooming in to it.

First time I had this was when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old, and I still get it now. Scary consistent. Usually requires me to get a fever, though...

I have been traumatized several times and so I see nightmares every single night. Most of my dreams are nightmares, actually, but instead of being scary, they're usually extremely emotionally heavy and so I often wake up just fucking horribly depressed and in a foul mood. That said, I do also occasionally get the scary kind and the one I saw a couple of days ago kind of sticks -- haven't managed to forget it just yet:

I contracted some sort of a disease and at first nothing seemed to happen. Then, these kind of wet sores started to develop all over my body, and a few days later they turned into rough, dry scabs. Then came the horrible itching of my skin everywhere. Lastly...these wriggly, worm-like things with black-and-white, spotty bodies covered in nasty, coarse hair started to grow from scabs -- wriggly, worm-like, nasty things growing out of my body everywhere!

That nightmare still makes my skin crawl when I think about it.

I have ADHD and the specific type of ADHD I have makes me have random spikes of “I can conquer anything, I feel great!” to “I hate life, what’s the point of this? Why does everything suck?!” (Combined type for those curious)

Well, thanks to jr. high trauma I suffered (I am 20 now) to where I was bullied every damn day, had homophobic slurs used against me all the time and was told to kill myself at least 3 times a day, it has stuck with me all the years. I can be in a good mood and than for no reason, my subconscious will remind me of it. So I wake up feeling terrible.

this last year, my dad had wanted me to take a gun class with him. He signed us both up in late February and I didn’t mind then. Well a week or two after that, I started getting dreams that we were practicing. My dad would finish his turn and then hand the gun to me. In this nightmare/dream, within five seconds

of him handing the gun to me, I put the gun to my head and I assume I kill myself because at that moment, I wake up. I have a little anxiety attack when this dream happens because every thing feels so real. Objects in my hand, the atmosphere, it’s terrifying.

the only way I was able to voice to my dad last month that I can’t go through with the class to him because I am

concerned about my mental health was drunk. My older brother thought it was the best way for me to tell him without crying or panicking or holding back tears.

he told me that’s fine. Fast forward to last week though and he told my brother and I who both suffer from depression/anxiety and suicidal thoughts that he thinks people who do end up committing it are cowards and had told me that he doesn’t want anything to deal with our emotions. So having a emotional unavailable parent is fun. Sorry if this is too dark, I can remove it or the mods can if they find it to be too “vulgar”/“dark”/“etc”.

if you do suffer from these issues though, please talk to someone. The suicide hot line helped me through jr high. It’s a common misconception that if you call them they send law enforcement to your house.

I don't disclose my nightmares...I'm compiling them for use in stories later.

If we're not being super serious though, things that involve elements of my nightmares hanging around after I wake up, i.e. the classic thing at the edge of your peripheral vision that you can't focus on, feeling like there's bruising from something that was standing on top of you while you were sleeping that you continue to feel after you wake up...psychosomatic stuff like that, yeah...that gets me.  I can get one of those types of nightmares and be jumping at shadows for days after.

That doesn't sound like ADHD, which is usually categorised by a "high drive" in general and also issues concentrating, but not by depressive episodes. It sounds exactly like bipolar disorder, which is categorised by phases of mania (the "I can conquer anything" phase) and phases of depression that change in a certain (or sometimes even random) interval.

I'm sorry to hear about your shitty family life. Once you'll be able to start your own life (own job, living on your own), it gets better.

I'm happy that I made it over my physical and mental abuse through my mother when I was a child. About 1.5 months ago, the trauma got fully triggered by a disease that flares up with stress and the end result actually made the trauma flare up, so I could finally bring the over a decade-long trauma to a close. What I needed was the people that appeared in my flashback-like scenarios to "confirm" that the abuse has stopped. It took over a decade, but it happened.

Since that time, I sleep very well and haven't had a single nightmare or even trouble sleeping.

What concepts repeat themselves for me are dead bodies (you know, the ones you see on shows like Bones that I actually enjoy watching; for some reason seeing these in the recurring nightmare from the past ~2-3 years is terrifying for me), or elevators crashing down. The dream with the elevator actually goes in hand with me being semi-conscious, questioning the sometimes odd physics yet still being unable to wake up, and when the elevator crashes down I actually feel pressure in my chest like you would when falling down. That's the nightmare I had for the longest.

Another phenomenon that I had from the time of my PTSD (that isn't strictly dreaming) was hypnagogia (your brain partly shutting down before you're falling asleep and thus you have (pseudo)-hallucinations. They can be of any sort of sensoric input. Auditive, visual, even feeling things). And in those, I've seen spiders coming from the ceiling or, in a dust cloud, flying through my window. It's always spiders. I actually woke up my brother once (who was visiting us) because that happened when he was there and he had a dust cloud with tiny spiders flying in his hair 😄

He wasn't pleased, neither was I 🤣

Since I fall asleep now within 10-30 minutes and I don't roll around half the night, that phenomenon has also stopped.

I've tried replying to this post about 3 times but Microsoft Edge (Chromium) keeps freezing for some reason.

I was diagnosed with combined ADHD type back in 2012 when I was in 5th grade. I do still get high drives, but it has mostly gone away as an adult. Combined means I get traits from both Inattentive, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

I've gotten manic episodes since Jr. High I want to say.  I honestly may have undiagnosed bipolar disorder as it tends to run in my family. Both my oldest brother and my mother have it, and my aunt on my dads side too.

As for dreams and hallucinating, it's amazing what an inactive mind can do while we are sleeping. The things we can dream of/think of are crazy. I found the nightmare that I had posted as my subconscious trying to tell me that I shouldn't be going near anything that I can hurt myself with. Just glad I took it seriously instead of brushing it off.

I saw kids in high school put through this every day, teachers were useless, they didn't want to get involved, they were way to jaded from all the assholes in the schools.

I stepped in once to stop a really bad situation from happening to a kid getting bullied, and it's one of the few events in my high school life I was proud of, that kid was also very very grateful and told me that after that they mostly left him alone. I have no idea what happened to him after high school though, I can only hope that life got better.

My oldest brother was also subject to bad bullying. He was 6 feet tall 120lbs back in highschool so really skinny. He has learning disabilities and never learned social queues, so he would try and be friends with everyone. The bullies would lock him in the lockers (he fit, barely), once for 3 hours. They burned him with cigarettes on the bus, beat him up.

He never talked about it though so my parents had no idea until his last year, and he didn't want to go to a new school, he wanted to finish.

Keep reaching for help when you need it, I'm sorry your Dad is like that, not everyone knows how to deal with emotional situations.

I know exactly what you mean. When I was very young, I would half wake up in the middle of the night and have hallucinations. One of them is this dreamy surreal zooming in and out that can hardly be described in words. It only happens when I get really sick nowadays.

I also sometimes hallucinate that the air is made of this weird material that is smooth but prickly. It sounds like complete non-sense saying it in words, but maybe you know what I'm talking about.

Wow. That absolutely pisses me off to read. I'm incredibly sorry that your brother had to go through that. I hope he doesn't have any traumatic/psychological damage. It's amazing how shitty schools are at preventing or helping students in situations like this.

That's the best indication for you to get that checked out, given the fact that multiple family members of yours actually are bipolar and it tends to be inherited.

Indeed. I always wonder what my dreams have to tell me and why they always circle around death directly (the bodies you see on certain TV shows) or around things that might be fatal (elevator crashes). Who knows? What the mind can come up with is truly amazing. Mostly, dreams are supposed to say something that troubles you as far as I've heard.

It's weird as I don't dream to often anymore, but when I do, it's usually related to subjects like the one in first post where something just seems overwhelming.

On the second to last cycle of my Capricorn nightmare I finally realized "wait a minute. this keeps happening. and I can control myself.

what if I whack them with a hammer?"

So I did.

When I whacked them they turned into Legos. One hit me in the eye. Then it reset.

On the last cycle I was like "screw it, imma get in their van and leave once they come in because they only go through the front door."

So I drove in the van and there were no cars. Apparently dream-me is a god at driving.

Anyway, I drove around for a bit and then decided to drive on the train tracks nearby since I've always wanted to do that.

So I did but then a train came and hit the car. And then I woke up.

The last two cycles were pretty fun, actually. I wish I could have kept going because there were so many things I wanted to do.

Its not a repeated nightmare or anything. I just had it once and it rattled me a little.

I used to work at a storage facility in the inner city. Show potential tenants of all walks of life lockers, take payments, open/close during the week or weekend, depending on my shift. Just like that old show on tv, except we didn't auction to the public.

I had a dream that I was doing my close, and I would shut the gates and outside doors, close the blinds etc. I would also go around the facility and turn the lights on or off depending on my shift.

So I did my daily close and am doing a walk around of the 3 floors including the basement. I start on the third floor and walk east to west making sure everything is clean, and turn off the lights as I pass the switches. I made it to the third floor stairwell on the west side of the building and some guy pops out from behind the open fire door and stabs me in the guts. I remember the pain, the warmth of my blood, the way my guts felt between my fingers as I tried to push and hold them back in. I remember sliding slowly down the stairs that were lubricated by my blood, feeling the rounded corners of the step pass over my body. And I remember going to sleep feeling helpless and regretful, then comforted and warm. I'm all tensed up right now..

It was a crazy dream. My wife was 6 months pregnant at the time.
