What tier of hardware would you consider "worthless"?

At what point, is it so old and so outdated, so underperforming, do you just consider it junk. It just can't keep up anymore (or in some cases couldn't keep up to begin with).

useless for what?

Intel's Itanium line from decades ago is still in use in some data centers.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Yeah, nothing is really "worthless".

One man's trash is another's treasure. It's more a question of value.

The question to ask yourself is: "Is X thing worth keeping? Is it worth the space that it will take up?"

If what you're trying to use for a given task can't do the task to the standard YOU want it to, it's no longer viable; that said, someone may well be looking for that same hardware, so...

EDIT:

Is this hypothetical or do you have a specific example?

This is a broad question, the answer really depends on your standards and use case. If we're talking about in general, then the majority of users could easily get away with a system with a 3rd or 4th Gen Intel Core chip, provided they had 8GB RAM and an SSD.

If we're talking about current gen stuff, then any ebay prebuilt systems or laptops around the £100/200 mark would be worthless to me, as they have super low end CPUs, and super low end everything elses.

If you're really into tech though, then something that the average person sees as trash could be incredibly desirable.

Desktop - i5-9600KF @4.8GHz all core, MSI Z390-A PRO, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz, MSI GTX 1660S OC 6GB, WD Blue 500GB M.2 SSD, Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD

Laptop - ASUS ZenBook 14 with ScreenPad, i7-1165G7, Xe iGPU 96EU, 16GB Octa-Channel 4200MHz, MX450 2GB, 512GB SSD with 32GB Optane

Old Laptop 1 - HP Pavilion 15, A10-9600P, R5 iGPU, 8GB, R8 M445DX, 2TB HDD

Nope, a GT1030 still beats them mostly.

If CPU fits either one of these criteria, I wouldnt consider using them in anyway period :

  • Single core,
  • has no X64 support,
  • Doesn't even support DDR2,

If a GPU fits either one of these criteria I wouldnt use them in anyway

  • No DX10 support,
  • No drivers for Windows 10 (or worst case scenario 7) or not supported by linux kernel,
  • Has less than 512mb of vram per GPU,

As far RAM and motherboard goes, if it fits any of these I wouldnt even bother picking it up:

  • Anything older than 775
  • Not even DDR2 support
  • Has no PCIE

This does not mean they are worthless, they just have no use for me.

Entirely depends on use case.

Sure a c2d might be bad for gaming, but is perfectly sufficient for a htpc or basic browsing machine

Personally, I wouldn't bother with anything older than Intel's 5th gen CPUs or AMD's equivalent, or NVIDIA's 700-series or AMD's equivalent. For RAM, HDDs and the likes, tho, it doesn't really matter as long as it works with whatever CPUs/mobos I have.

If it works, it's useable... if YOU have no use case for it, then bin it (flip it, if you 'need' the money).

EDIT:

I still have an i5-750 with its 'board & RAM... I can't bring myself to sell it/bin it, so I'm hanging on to it.

The tier where your grandma couldn't safely and satisfactorily browse the internet with it. Remember that even hardware which can't play games at all could still be valuable to someone simply as an outlet for communication and information.

Of course this is setting aside the fact that even hardware older than that isn't necessarily "worthless" to a hobbyist who wants to build a retro machine, depending on what it is.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Personally, today, I wouldn't bother with anything older than fourth gen core i5 for Intel and gen 1 Ryzen 5 for AMD as for as old hardware goes...

And as for new hardware... it depends. If it's a dual core, I wouldn't even bother thinking about it and GPUs under what I'd consider "mid to low range" like a GTX1050, is also out of my range of products I care for.

That said, once you reach the point where the old hardware simply doesn't work anymore on newer OSes, it might be time to replace it or switch to Linux. Outdated OSes is just a security risk on your network.

But as long as someone, somewhere out there, thinks their old Pentium 3 computer running Windows ME is "good enough" for their purpose, who am I to silently judge them.

The very top tier and the very bottom tier.

I aim for upper middle tier for best value up to middle upper tier for something special without going OTT.
