Hello, I was looking at buying an R9 fury to have while i wait for my new gpu. My plan was to later give it to my sister as an upgrade to her current pc.

I have two questions regarding this.

Her current set up a i5 2500 and a gtx 660, the psu is a antec 650W unit. Will the psu handle the upgrade or will it crash and burn? Some quick calculations puts the total at some where around 400 W (65+275+some other stuff)

My second question is.

The psu has a total of 4x4-pin connectors (2x8-pin). The card needs all of them, but the motherboard (a msi z77 bigbang) also need a 4 pin + the 24-pin and the 6-pin cpu. Could I a use all the 4-pins to the gpu and then buy a molex->4-pin adapter for the motherboard or is that a bad idea?

There is no 4-pin power connector that can be plugged into a GPU. You seem to be confusing the 4-pin or 8-pin EPS connector which is for the CPU, and the 6-pin or 8-pin PCIe connector which is for the GPU. These are not equivalent, and cannot be used interchangeably.

 

Generally speaking, if the PSU does not come with the connectors you need, then it is not suitable for your build.

I think you are confusing this with the gpu

There is no 4 pin gpu and no 6 pin cpu. 

CPU connectors are 4 pin or 4+4/8 pin

GPU connectors are 6 pin or 6+2/8 pin

Sorry my bad, I mixed up the connectors.

 

The psu has 2x6 pin, 1x8 pin (how do you tell if it is a EPS or a PCIe connector? No markings) and 2x4 pin.

 

The cpu has a 8-pin, the motherboard has a 6 pin and the proposed gpu has 2x8 pin.

Is it possible to use the 2x4-pin for the cpu, the 8 pin combined with the 2x6-pins for the gpu and a molex to 6 pin for the MB?

It might not be optimal and look like shit but would it work? Or is it just to buy a new psu?

 

Cant tell if the 8-pin is EPS or if it is PCIe so don´t really know, also is it even possible to combine 2x4-pin to a 8-pin?

It is likely a 4+4 pin EPS connector. They do it this way for compatibility with motherboards that have just a 4-pin. For 8-pin motherboards, they are combined together.

It sounds like you are already using it to power the CPU which would make it an EPS connector, but it wouldn't make sense to have a solid 8-pin instead of a 4+4 pin. It's more common for a solid 8-pin to be a PCIe connector, although those are also usually done as 6+2 pin for compatibility reasons. If you aren't already using it to power the CPU, then it is most likely a PCIe connector. Providing the exact model name of the PSU would be helpful.

Everything except the last bit with the motherboard 6-pin. I could never advise adapting from a 4-pin molex to a 6-pin PCIe. Fortunately for you, that 6-pin connector on the motherboard is entirely optional. It's only "needed" for 3-way or more SLI. It's mostly a gimmick. The PCIe slot will get the 75W it needs from the 24-pin cable. So you can safely leave that motherboard 6-pin unconnected.

Thanks, I was not aware of the optional 6-pin!

The psu is an "antec tpn 650xr" and the pc is currently using the solid 8-pin for the cpu with no issues. I find is stange to have the connectors fit in both a PCIe cards and the CPU, would it not lead to many people damaging their components?

It does not fit. It is keyed differently. I suppose if you use enough force, you'll make it fit, though. 🤔

 

Anyway, it sounds like you'll be needing a new power supply in order to use that GPU.

Ok thanks for your help, but why would the psu come with both 2x4 and 1x8 pin if you only need one?

It's a server PSU. For it's intended use, it very well may have needed them all. Some modern consumer boards also are coming with an 8-pin and a 4-pin, or even two 8-pin connectors for the CPU, although usually plugging in the additional connector is optional. It's not an unusual configuration.
