OCCT memory errors with XMP profile (3600MHz CL16)

Hey guys, I have issues with running my 32GB memory kit (2x16GB) at their desired XMP Profile1. When I was using MSI Z370-A Pro computer wouldn't even post on XMP Profile, so I've tried manual configuration, where I was able to get to windows and run some tests but I was getting bunch of errors in OCCT memory test as well as in TM5 with Extreme1 @anta777 config. Since then I had RMA'd the RAM but even with the new one I have same issue. so I decided to switch to Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro wifi motherboard where I am able to post with XMP Profile on but I am still getting errors during OCCT memory testing. I am not sure what else I could look at?

  • CPU: Intel i9 9900K stock, motherboard auto overclock is off (tried overclocking it in the past, 1.395v with vdroop to ~1.37v but wasn't stable for long run so gave up).
  • MOBO: MSI Z370-A Pro and Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi
  • RAM: G.SKILL RIPJAWS 32GB 3600MHZ CL16-19-19 F4-3600C16D-32GVKC --- Installed in dual channel (slot 2 & 4)
  • GPU: EVGA 3080 XC3
  • PSU: Corsair RM850 850W

Here's list of various configurations I have tried and all of them have errors in OCCT within couple minutes (MSI Z370-A Pro):

Spoiler

  1. CPU, VCCSA, CPUIO Voltages Auto
    • XMP Profile ON, everything else Auto
  2. CPU, VCCSA, CPUIO Voltages Auto
    • DRAM frequency 3600MHz
    • DRAM voltage Auto
    • DRAM configuration Linked
    • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T
  3. CPU, VCCSA, CPUIO Voltages Auto
    • DRAM frequency 3600MHz
    • DRAM voltage 1.4
    • DRAM configuration Linked
    • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T
  4. CPU, VCCSA, CPUIO Voltages Auto
    • DRAM frequency 3600MHz
    • DRAM voltage 1.45
    • DRAM configuration Linked
    • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T
  5. CPU, VCCSA, CPUIO Voltages Auto
    • DRAM frequency 3600MHz
    • DRAM voltage 1.45
    • DRAM configuration Linked
    • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T
  6. CPU Voltage Auto
    • VCCSA 1.32v
    • VCCIO 1.28v
    • DRAM frequency 3600MHz
    • DRAM voltage 1.45
    • DRAM configuration Linked
    • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T

I just configured it with slightly slower DRAM frequency with new kit and OCCT seems to be fine even after 30 minutes of testing, it wasn't possible with previous kit (pre-RMA).

  • CPU voltage offset -0.100 (That's what I would normally run)
  • VCCSA 1.25
  • VCCIO 1.20
  • DRAM frequency 3500MHz
  • DRAM voltage 1.38
  • DRAM configuration Linked
  • DRAM settings CL 16 tRCD 19 tRP 19 tRAS 39 tRFC 631, CR 2T

This may just be the memory controller on your CPU not being good enough to support that high of transfer rate, tight of timings, or both.

I don't remember specific sources but I recall hearing a few times that 9th and 10th gen Intel are not great with RAM over 3200 mtu and cl16. I'm not sure if 11th gen has been tested much in this regard yet.

Up the cpu io voltage to 1.25.

Up the dram voltage to 1.4

Report your dram temp.

If ur dram temp go over 50 degrees, then it could be temp issue.

I have tried these voltages and I was getting errors. Unfortunately neither of these two motherboards reports DRAM temps, so dont know if it is overheating.

so OCCT is not reporting dram temps?

Noctua D15S, CPU is around 60C during memory tests. 75C during CPU tests in OCCT and latest Cinebench multithread.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sooo, I swapped  CPU to the 9900KF and I still get errors with memory at 3600MHz (XMP profile). I am going to run TM5 with profile recommended on that github page, lets see if it's program problem...
