Add a template to Troubleshooting

WhitetailAni

As I'm sure you've all seen, there are a plethora of topics posted in Troubleshooting that describe their problem in good detail, but omit their system specs.

There's also some like this:

Spoiler

halp pc not booting no fan spin no rgb no power led system specs ryzen 5 3600 b450-f gaming ii 16gb 3600 mghz gtx 1660 super corsair mr750 phanteks p300a

I feel that adding a template similar to New Builds and Planning would help solve this.

Example:

Quote

What's your problem?
<insert problem description here>

What are your system specs? Please include part numbers for power supply, such as "Corsair RM650", not "650w 80+ gold", and some description for RAM, such as "Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200 C16", not "16gb 3200 mhz":

<system specs go here>

What have you tried to fix it so far? If nothing, put "nothing":

<what they did, if anything>

Any other details, such as how old the system is, if you bought the parts used, etc:

Any thought? Feel free to come up with your own templates if you desire - I made mine in 3 minutes.

Well, there *IS* a sticky / pinned thread with a "template" or guide on what information you need to provide.

But nobody follows it...

Quote

WHEN MAKING YOUR POST, ALWAYS:

  • Describe the problem you are having in detail but without rambling. If your post is as long as this one, it's too long.
  • Include your operating system including version and 32/64 bit.
  • Include your entire system specs, including the wattage of your PSU.
  • Tell us which BIOS version you have. Some problems can be fixed by updating to the latest BIOS, so check that there are no updates available
  • Include any software running when it crashes (if applicable)
  • Give full details of any error messages and screenshots if possible
  • Use an informative title briefly describing the error. It's not helpful to see a thread titled "please help" or "Urgent" because most people are better at some problems than others, so may not prioritize your issue, and some people will ignore you completely.

Unless... when they create a new topic, the template is automatically generated/filled in the thread/topic body.

I think, that way, people will fill the info in, at least attempt it...hopefully...

What @LogicalDrm is getting at there is that a significant number of the topics that end up in Troubleshooting and New Builds were originally posted in General Discussion (or another incorrect section), and later moved to the right place, so a template wouldn't help them.

It would be wrong to use that as a reason not to improve the situation for the majority of topics that are posted in the right place though - we also can't stop people from deleting the template and still not providing enough details, but we can make it more likely that they will provide the necessary details.

I think it makes sense to add a template, the difficult part will be finding the right template to use. The one in the OP here would definitely be a good start though, and I will look into it.
