Asus Tuf Gaming z590-plus 12 pin CPU connector, can I use just the 8 pin?

20210427_112552.thumb.jpg.426b8b0509dce11d7b9261ea799bd270.jpgYou guys are aweome.. always watching your latest vids.

First photo is my old pc. I could only get it to overclock to 5.1ghz. It would BSOD at 5.2. My room mate has the exact same build and he can overclock to 5.7ghz. I spent $1300 for a minor upgrade.

Doing a new build. Asus Tuf Gaming Z590-Plus. Intel 11700K, 3 M.2 ; 980 Pro 1 T, 970 Pro 512, 960 Pro 512,, 32 gb Viper 35200 4400 MHz non rgb mem 4x8gb. Do I need to add a 4 pin power connector on the board? Up near the top of the board is a 8 pin plus 4. My power supply is a 850 EVGA. I dont have another 4 pin connector, is it needed? or can I get going with the 8 pin and get a 4 pin later? I am assuming I should be able to make my water cooler boil. I have a old Nvidia Xtreme Gaming Gpu 1060. I have been trying to get a new GPU, Id like to get a 3060, or the 3070 Ti, but no one has any, without a wheel barrow of gold.

That's an 8 pin and a 4+4 pin connector next to each other. It's two different cables.

You also only need the 4 pin if you get into crazy overclocking.

Edit:

Sorry, skimmed through the wall of photos at first. You probably do need the 4 pin to overclock more. The motherboard delivers 75W to the CPU, and the 8 PIN EPS will deliver 235W continuous.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

The computer will run with just the 8 pins (4+4), but you will not be able to overclock (or at least not as far) without the extra 4 pin power connector.

You'll need to buy a better quality power supply, not just a higher wattage one.

  1. The extra 4 pin power connector is really not necessary. The 8 pin, with the socket itself, can provide over 200W of continuous power, way more than the "95W" rated for the i7 11700k (https://www.overclock.net/threads/gpu-and-cpu-power-connections.1773088/)
  2. Always avoid adaptors, if possible. Electricity is nothing to mess around with; you risk damaging your electronics, fires, or death. Just because it plugs in (and "works") doesn't mean you should use it. (Please don't reply with specific use cases and how "it's been fine for them for x amount of time". It's a risk, not a guarantee.)
