BOINC Pentathlon 2021

if I got time this week I'll try that but I'll need to install it under truenas

My experience trying to install BOINC under FreeBSD were...less than successful. I tried doing it in a jail and could not figure it out for the life of me.

The Bhyve hypervisor included in FreeNAS (and I assume TrueNAS CORE) has quite a bit of ugly overhead in compute heavy applications so if you don't need this NAS online for your daily needs over the next two weeks I'd grab a spare SSD/HDD and run Ubuntu Server 20.04.2 LTS or your preference of other distro.

If you do need access to the storage you could install the zfsutils-linux package and import your ZFS pool then setup a SAMBA share. This would enable access to your NAS storage while making BOINC easier to setup and manage on a "better supported" distro with less overhead.

If you do choose to go this route and have questions feel free to ask.

If you want to manage this boinc-client server from another system on the network I can aid in that too if you're using something Debian based.

I'll follow up if I decide to do it. Its mostly about time and it being hot this week 😞
I can manage it locally easy enough I've got a monitor+KB on the server already

I should see if I can use some of my supercomputer time at work towards this. 🤣 it wouldn't be the xeon phi nodes and I don't think the Milan system is ready yet
now I could put it on my nas with its 2xE5 2620. if I got time this week I'll try that but I'll need to install it under truenas

That would be awesome if you could sneak in some HPC time

Yeah, I concede. I can't compete against your GPU power. Right now I just wanna reach 100Y Diamond for OPN but that won't happen before the start of the Pent. I'll go on hold very soon and get SiDock running on all stations.

I really should have bought at least a GPU or two since the R9 290X came out. Now I'm in a dilly of a pickle. If my GPU dies I will have no choice but to pay scalper asking prices otherwise I'll have no desktop to work with at all. 😕

I really want a RX 6800XT but the asking price right now is about double what MSRP was at launch. One GPU for the price of two...

Yeah the situation right now sucks. Luckily I have a HD5670 and a HD2400 that still work (well the 2400 has a 40mm Noctua strapped to it 😉 when I need display out on the handful of systems I have with no GPU.

My daily driver uses an older FirePro Wx4100 as I don’t game and Adobe suite certification and 10-bit colour we’re more important. I do plan on upgrading it but I’m waiting for the new cores to come to the mid range Radeon Pros.

All the time. Just let it roll off you back like water off a duck.

My clients are very demanding and I’m constantly telling them you can’t do that so I’m sure I’m known as Mordac the preventer. I wear a stress jacket at work. It’s super sticky so all the shit sticks to it and I take it off at the end of the day so I don’t bring any of it home.

I've recently sold a few of my older cards to raise some cash to invest in newer cards, unfortunately the only cards I can get hold of at retail are 6700XT's. If I had a choice I would have preferred to go for the cheaper 3060ti or the similarly priced 3070, but at least these 6000 series cards work with my risers in my FAH machine, fortunately the 6700XT has around double the performance of the 5700XT, so its not too bad.

My FAH machine now has 3x 6700XT's, 1x 6800XT and 1x 6900XT, which can do between 12-14mil ppd, not too bad for one machine. Now I'm looking to build a dedicated machine for my nvidia cards, hopefully I can grab one of those 3080ti's.

The problem is I have sold more cards that I have bought, and the ones I have bought have all gone into 2 machines, admittedly I got myself into this mess, so now I'm having to put retro cards into some of my machines to get them up and running for this event 😁

I do technically have a MSI Radeon HD 7770 kicking around but the old ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard that acts as a BOINC node won't POST without a GPU so...

I then technically also have two Radeon HD 7970's but both are beyond fickle from age.

I then also technically have a spare blower style R9 290 but I used it as a mining card way back when and burned it up.

I'd say there's a wee bit of bunkering happening. My tasks pending Validation have gone from 75 to 375 over the last day and 1/2.

Also I'm now seeing "CurieMarieDock on BOINC + zipped input" tasks (name: cmdock-boinc-zip) as well as "CurieMarieDock on BOINC" tasks (name: cmdock-boinc) now so if your using app_config.xml files you might need to adjust them.

I don't know how accurate the estimates are, think I saw some of mine complete around 60-65% like someone else also mentioned but this is what my Ubuntu 20.04 VM running on dual Xeon X5675 server show.

I haven't been tracking mine so I couldn't say how much I'm affected by it or try to read in to how much others are doing it.

But I do have a fair amount pending, but what I don't know is if my tasks that were submitted before Marathon start date once validated will count or the submission date of them is used (think that is the case). So sadly I don't think any of those ~1400 will score us any points.

My presumption is that they track current credit totals for the teams. Seeing as the credit is only awarded after validation they should count towards the total.

I tend to agree. Most sites just report the current points per user at a fixed date. I don't think there is any external exposure to when the task was completed other than the internal project stats themselves and I can't see SETI Germany writing a bunch of separate parsers for the various events.

I tend to agree. Most sites just report the current points per user at a fixed date. I don't think there is any external exposure to when the task was completed other than the internal project stats themselves and I can't see SETI Germany writing a bunch of separate parsers for the various events.

Free Bunkering without the hassle!

Hopefully, I seem to remember last year they specifically said they were using reported date/time. Also why they don't actually like WCG because I think their reporting of stats/tasks is different. Can't remember well enough though.

Alright. SiDock running on 4/6 systems.

The 5960X rig is apparently not stable under the SiDock load. So I have to lower the OC.

My 1950X desktop doesn't list SiDock in the list of projects and typing in the project site manually results in a Failed to add error...
