BOINC Pentathlon 2021

I'm not getting any new tasks for SiDock@home, and there don't seem to be any available either, going by the server statistics. Guess I'll just bunker WCG in the meantime. Thanks @Gorgon for the guide to bunkering.

I just forced an update on one of my systems and got 7 new tasks. Check your Event Log. It will probably tell you:

2021-05-03 3:30:35 AM | SiDock@home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
2021-05-03 3:30:35 AM | SiDock@home | Requesting new tasks for CPU
2021-05-03 3:30:36 AM | SiDock@home | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
2021-05-03 3:30:36 AM | SiDock@home | No tasks sent
2021-05-03 3:30:36 AM | SiDock@home | This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress

There's a hard-limit on SiDock of 2 tasks per thread so you can only have twice the thread count in a system at a time.

Also, BOINC gets a little weird if you have a lot of cached tasks (Ready to Start) in your Queue from other projects. Sometimes you have to try Aborting cached tasks to make room in the Queue.

Currently shows over 7500 tasks:

At work we're about to stop using 7 of these boxes. 12 blades per box, every blade has 4 cores. Nothing too fancy, but still 48 cores per box, with potentially 336 cores on the marathon!

Hell yes if you can, 336 is wayyy heaps.

So question, do we actually want to focus on first Javelin throw instead of Marathon?

I feel like skipping this one to see how the marathon goes may be a good move and I'm sure many other teams will probably do the same.

Yea just also thinking it's a good time as there are no other conflicting events other than marathon, like sprint etc. Since it's lowest of 3 that count having a good one banked means we only need to worry about 2 more over the 2 weeks.

Problem is we don't know what a good one is or how much is too much.

I'll do whatever you think is best, I'm bunkering by turning off networking so my systems will be free to do whatever once the marathon starts. Just let us know.

Yeah, I checked after I saw your post and got a few more. I don't have a problem with the BOINC cached jobs, thankfully, even after bunkering for WCG. I only got 5 tasks, but I think it's for the best because I do need to restart my computer from time to time and I don't want to lose too much progress on those SiDock tasks. Also, I thought you'd like to know, on one core of a R5 3600 @ 4Ghz, the first task I ran finished in 3 hours 54 mins. It's the same application you've posted runtimes for, CurieMarieDock.

Question for those that know, CPU or GPU?

Answered: CPU

Oh sweet, WCG-MIP you can bunker the crap out of that one IIRC the return time is like 5 days or something to that extent.

I'll put some focus on saving up WUs for that if Gorgon or one of the others ask. I think last year we put the most effort into the 3rd throw?

Yea, but we have to make 3 good ones as it's 3rd best used for the ranking points.

Based on current Team RAC we're going to find it hard to do better than 4th or hold 4th, for Marathon. So unless there is a boat load of RAC coming we might want to gun for a different event.

I don't know, would like other people's assessment on how they think things will play out.

That's hard for me to say.

I believe in diminishing returns. If we can reach and hold a decent position in the marathon then putting more focus into other events will do us more good than fighting to go one step higher.

Good Morning (Go to bed Leadeater 😴)

Personally I am not planning on participating in any event not related to COVID so I'll be leaving my CPUs in the Marathon and GPUs on F@H unless other COVID-related events get announced.

AFAIK the only other COVID Boinc projects are Rosetta and OpenPandemics. OpenPandemics would be sweet as the GPU event but the current "beta-beta" of the GPU tasks there will likely drain of tasks ~ Tuesday at 12:00GMT according to the admins there.

@GOTSpectrum can you do another Shout-out in the Folding Community Thread asking for folks to move their CPUs over to the marathon and perahps get a Mod to Pin it as the Answer?

It will be increasingly more difficult to asses how we are performing in the Marathon as I've seen my Validation Pending count increasing steadily since we got two days out from the start.

So one benefit of other people bunkering on the Marathon is though I'm not those points will be granted when the wingmen rel;ease their bunkers and so will count towards my Marathon totals.

First time doing this, thanks for the Discord shoutout, Spectrum. I have 9 of my 12 Ryzen 3900X cores and 4 out of 4 of my Intel NUC i5 8th Gen cores on SiDock 😁.

Glad to be participating!

My wife (AKA "She who must be obeyed") almost lost her sheet when I told her I was participating in a Marathon. She's 10 years younger than I and is a runner who competes in several marathons every year and unlike me doesn't have an extra 40lbs on her waist (Fat-bellied router geek)

I told her not to worry - I had two weeks to complete it and I'd be sweating in the basement not from exertion but rather from the heat.
