It's times like this I wish the Xeon/Server market as a whole supported overclocking

Hell yea, just a "Void my warranty option in the bios" then go nuts. Wish that was a thing.

May as well. I'm sure as heck not paying the sticker price for these chips new, so they didn't come with a warranty when I go them anyways.

So overnight the 4.7 on cores 0-3 and 4.6 on cores 4-7 was stable, I think I'll leave it at that honestly

you should have expanded that further. I’m only 33,000 results behind you and whereas a CPU thread can take 1-3 hours to return a result a single mid tier GPU can yield 60 to 90 results in the same period.

As for the run-time issue for badges WCG is aware of the discrepancy and will be addressing it. Getting the science results done is the priority for now.

P.S. I did 2.5 million BOINC points in the last 24 hours with a 1060 6GB and a 1070ti and 3032 results.

But yes, it does seem like “cheating”

Maybe I hid that point on purpose. What results are you averaging per day? 👀

I'm skeptical about 60~90. I know my R9 290X is old by today's standards but each result takes ~10-15 minutes. That's 4~18 in 1-3 hours. A modern mid-tier GPU returns 60~90 in the same time? I know GPU's are much faster now but I don't know about 5-7 times faster.

And at the end of the day it is the fact the research is getting done that matters. I don't know how they plan to handle GPU work. Going off of number of CUDA cores or Streaming Processors would kind of destroy the current run time system. Maybe they're make a fourth category for GPU compute.

I’m running 3 concurrent on the 1060 and 4 on the 1070ti.  The new improved tasks sit in CPU for the first half of their time so the GPU sits idle.  Some blessed with 3080 and 3090s report being able to run 8-16 concurrently.

Just signed up for SiDock and started crunching those on my i5-6400 and e3-1231v3 for now. Only 10 threads so far once the OpenPandemic tasks finish off.

I’ll add some more resources over the weekend but so far I’m only getting CurieMarie units which on those slow pokes show 6 hour completion times.

I was actually at work the other day and those 4 HP enterprise cabinets are still sitting on the loading dock from last year.  If I only had a three phase service at home I could give you a run for your money 🙈🙉🙊

Maybe after I retire I’ll go back to do some work for the HPC group if they can give me some slices.

Well, I can't go up against that. Not for much longer at least. Post-Pent I'm turning my systems down from 100% to 50% duty-cycle because of rising outside temperatures. It's cool that you have the hardware to donate as hard as you do. I'm more of a CPU aficionado than I am GPU and a lot of WCG projects are predominantly that so this is still a good suit for me even if I never get to taste first place. 🙂

Although I would have known it for at least a little while had @leadeater not gone an "borrowed" all those work servers last year. :old-angry:

I was actually at work the other day and those 4 HP enterprise cabinets are still sitting on the loading dock from last year.  If I only had a three phase service at home I could give you a run for your money 🙈🙉🙊

4 racks is more than I am using so you'd definitely be higher, by quite a bit. You probably don't have the power to do this anyway but you can actually combine multiple single phase feeds and get an output of 3 phase. At least the more residential way of doing this is via a grid tied inverter that has 3 phase output capability or has phase linking between 3 units and has an operating mode of 3 phase.

And then there is the jank way to do it 🙃

I could be very wrong about this since I only know of it's use for electric motors but a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) can give you 3 phase from a single 208V-240V single phase hook-up.

Most homes at least in the US have 240V (I believe you're in Canada...?) I think you guys have 240V in the home too. Set the VFD to 50~60Hz and it would handle creating three 120° out of phases phases from your single phase. I don't know if it would work for servers though...

Yes, Canada is the same as the US. Our Grids are interconnected and Québec sells a lot of electricity to the US.

Though the transformer is less than 10 feet from my distributed computing systems I think the primary is only 4800v so likely single phase opposed like the 240v on its secondary. All our utilities are underground so I don’t know where the nearest 13k8 transformers are.

I haven’t played with 3 phase since first year Uni when I decided to go into communications rather than power. Scary stuff. We’ve had at least 2 electricians at work die over the years working in live panels.

ufff yea whenever I work on the power stuff I've made I'm like ultra super careful or isolate power. Can't do that with my battery systems which scares me the most. Don't think I want that sort of thing to be my day job either.

Eh, I've spent more on server grade SSD's. It'd be worth it to power a 3-phase rack in my house. :3

I'm just saying you can create 3 phase in your house. Obviously the power has to come from somewhere so the supply side is going to see a much higher current draw than any of the phases you create so expect to need a FAT 240V breaker in the panel.
