BOINC Pentathlon 2021

Looks like the Chechs are pushing hard to overtake on the Sprint. We'll have to keep an eye on them.

BOINC_Pent_Chech_Sprint.jpg.38e38c077a68e998595b769ba41f32e3.jpg

It appears that we have to do the third throw on Javelin and do better than 10.8 million in order to take 5th place and pull in front of the Chechs and Rechenkraft:

Can you move your system off SiDock and onto NFS@home. @leadeater says we're safe on Marathon but we need some help on the Sprint so Leadeater can bunker WCG MBI for the final Javelin throw.

And don't forget to join the LinusTechTips_Team if you're signing up at NFS for the first time (like I did 🤪 )

You might have to change your preferences to allow the boinc-client to use more system memory. I believe the defaults are to only allow it to use 50% of the installed RAM. I had to update mine to 85% on a couple of systems to get all the threads running on NFS@home as some were stuck "Waiting for Memory"

There are preferences you can set at the NFS@home site as well to only select tasks with lower memory but most of the tasks available are for the larger memory requirements.

Well, it seems to be using less than a gigabyte per thread, and I have only 4.... So it's using  less than half but I think it's 'cause other applications are taking up RAM. Well, I'll try the lower ram require ment ones. Thanks

"A high ideal missed by a little, is far better than low ideal that is achievable, yet far less effective"

If you think I'm wrong, correct me. If I've offended you in some way tell me what it is and how I can correct it. I want to learn, and along the way one can make mistakes; Being wrong helps you learn what's right.

Yep just let NFS go through, no bunkering required.

NFS (The project, not the network file sharing protocol)

go through (Run the project NFS@home)

no bunkering required (don't limit your uploads)

Excellent - we're holding off the Chechs for now:

BOINC_Pent_Chech_Sprint2.jpg.6d1c68d3799854c88853243586a2e565.jpg

So, after the Sprint is done tomorrow we should transfer all threads over to WCG MBI for the last Javelin throw then once that's done finish off on the Marathon?

Sigh.... bunch of complaining in the Pentathlon chat about rented computer power. Our F@H folding month people do that and nobody gives a flying f.....

I don't get it, if a person or team wants to do it then it's their money.

Spoiler

Maybe I should install BOINC on our 10,000 workstations and use our unused compute time allocation on our national Cray compute service. Now complaining about that I could understand.

My take is that however you get the compute power you're throwing at a project, you're ultimately still advancing a scientific cause. If you believe in that strongly enough or are just having enough fun with playing around with resource management/competing, it shouldn't matter where the compute resources come from.

... Also it would be difficult and time consuming to enforce anyway, and arguably the entire point of these events is to drive a surge in progress on various compute projects...

Were ahead by just over 1 million points and slowly increasing the lead. If we can maintain this we might be able to get @leadeater some breathing room to bunker for the Javelin throw.

I don't know about the others, but by morning I was able to work for NFS on all machines, so maybe the problem is over. So everyone back (according to non-anonymous instructions) in full force on NFS. At Einstein, we dropped to eighth place in the final, but overall we still have a real chance of fifth place. In front of us is the Rechenkraft.net team, with which nothing will change compared to us on the spear. Who is obviously waiting for the biggest point jump is the [H] ard | OCP team, which will jump by at least 7 positions on the spear. So +21 points and Rechenkraft.net will take three points each. This puts +/- several points at the same level as the CNT and the Rechenkraft.net team. It will depend on each position in other still competitive projects, which will determine 5-8 overall place. LinusTechTips_Team is also waiting in line for our possible hesitation. It will be important for us to maintain the current position on the SiDock and especially to move forward on the NFS and thus gain some extra points in the overall evaluation. So try everyone to count NFS, if there are drives. So stretch the work right until the end of the competition, now there are enough units: idea: The final fights are waiting for us, it goes to a tough

I switched 20 threads onto NFS@home yesterday, but because that server failed just after I couldn't upload most of my results + one of my computers seems to have gone into sleep mode. I've started running them all again now.

Do they not realize we are going to pass them on Jav? pschoefer already said if things play out as they should we will tie with RKN on points but will be awarded 5th from higher placements in events (3:2 or something, I don't know but we are getting 5th overall).
