EVGA RTX 3060 Mining and Gaming Question

I built a new computer and I'm going to be mining when I'm not gaming. I installed the NVIDIA 470.05 beta drivers and EVGA Precision X1. Currently the power target is set to 64%, GPU core at -500, and memory at +1080. However I can set the GPU core to -1000? That seems crazy. With NiceHash's QuickMiner, I'm getting almost 44MH/s at 108W. I read about people getting almost 50MH/s with profitability at $3/day. Am I missing something? That seems really low.

This is what Excavator gives for example:

Also has anyone tried gaming on these drivers? I see it's missing the PhysX driver which sucks cus I want the eye candy on my games that isn't SC2 and CS:GO.

Dollar return for mining I understand is heavily dependent on electricity costs.  Many of the big miners set up shop in Manchuria because there was subsidized electricity.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Your hashrate is about right. I get 59-60MH/s on my 3060 Ti. The profitability per day is a little off right now, because Bitcoin took a tumble. It'll improve as it goes back up again.

As for games, being stuck on that driver revision is going to cause problems sooner rather than later, but you'll cut you hashrate back down to 20-25MH/s if you update. That's the breaks with the 3060, unfortunately, you're ultimately going to have to make a decision between game stability and mining potential going forward. More likely than not, gaming is going to win out.

That's not really an issue any more now that Bitcoin is so high. You have to factor in electricity costs, but with a 30 series card, you're going to make far more money mining than the cost in electricity. I make $5-6/day and pay maybe $.25 in electricity.

Depends on electrical costs.  They vary wildly by area.

The reported numbers for hashrate from nicehash jump all over the place from my experience. The main thing you want to look at is what you are getting paid every 24 hours and if it is inline then there isn't anything to worry about. Nicehash's estimate for a 3060 is $3.48/24hours.

I don't know if this is necessarily true as the folks that are renting our GPU power through Nicehash have a constant price. So we are always getting paid the same amount but its just the amount of bitcoin changes dependent on the price. Like I said this is how I understand it but I am not 100% sure

In Bitcoin, but the value of that Bitcoin in USD is dependent on the market.

It will stay above zero pretty much anywhere. That’s why the 3080 is so popular with miners.  It doesn’t necessarily stay all that far above zero though.  The card still draws what it draws.  This is why miners under lock.  Less power use.  He asked why some people were only clearing $3/day. I explained it.  It’s the increased electrical costs of mining.  Electricity in Germany is very expensive for example.  Don’t hear about a lot of miners there.  I suspect if mining hit long ago most miners would be in the TVA area (Tennessee valley authority). Apparently lately American miners like Nevada outside of Las Vegas.

Except in the OP's case, that isn't the reason. I get your point, but a 3060, combined with lower Bitcoin to USD exchange right now, means you're going to top out around $3-4/day, just in gross revenue.

Well I live in Ontario, Canada where we have some of the highest electricity costs in the country. On peak electricity fees with the delivery charge is about $0.2/kWh. Mid peak is about $0.13/kWh and off peak is about $0.1/kWh. I guess I can turn off my overlock to save a few pennies. It probably adds up to $5 in a month 😂

What about my settings though? Should I lower the core clock even more? I didn’t have much time last night but it seems like I need the power limit to be about 65%. I’m going to try lowering the core clock even more. Does an absurdly low core clock impact mining? Most, if not all of the gains come from the VRAM after all.

Yes but we will always make $3.50 usd no matter if bitcoin is 60,000 or 50,000,  we'll just get more or less bitcoin at time of payments.

I'd recommend using the optimizations that NiceHash has built in. They have worked well for me.

As per the sticky comment, down clocking the core results in reduced mining performance on the RTX 3060. Gonna see if I can break the 46MH/s barrier I'm sitting at when my computer is idle.

You overclock but also have a lower than average core clock?  Those two seem mutually exclusive to me.

Use the nicehash auto tune in the OC settings, it does an excellent job of finding the best hashrate at any core, I have found that underclocking actually improves my hashrates not to mention saves electricity.

The number you want to look at is the average hashrate, not the current or reported because those are very short poll rates.  Most people that report higher numbers are probably just cherry picking the reported rates they like the most.  Also there is a lot of luck involved, if you're catching small portions of blocks your hashrate is going to be lower, if you get bigger chunks your hashrate is going to be higher (that's what I'm assuming as to why there is so much variability).  Then throw in stale shares and that affects the number.  You really need to run for a couple days 24/7 to get a realistic hashrate and even then it will vary.

Here is a chart of my 1070 over 7 hours, the hashrate varies from 20-45MHs in that time frame.

I'm on the start of a theory that temps affect hashrates even when your not reported as throttling, the dip where it started going back up was about when I opened all the windows and cooled the house off.  I'll have to do some more testing and observation but this is the second time I've seen this trend.

Screenshot 2021-04-26 194039.png

yep same dip same time, I'm going to have to watch thermals and see if I'm throttling
