I currently have an i7 8700, looking to upgrade.

It's manly for gaming, although I do tend to have other applications running in the background (videos, music, downloads). I prefer a cpu with low tdp.

From what I understand the i9 has is slightly faster when it comes to single core clock. But the ryzen 7 is faster in overall and has more cache.

I'm having a hard time choosing between this two.

What's wrong with your current 8700?

Reuse this. You have the budget for a 5800x. Your RAM is a bit slow so if you want to upgrade that go for it.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor €440.16 @ PC Componentes
Motherboard MSI MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard €146.90 @ Globaldata

If you don't need wifi then you could always go for another board

Yes, I las looking at the 5800x yesterday, but the higher tdp is a real turn off.

I live in a old house with electrical problems, I need something with low consumption.

Has far has the Ram goes, I was going for both faster and more, what speed would you recomend?

Somehow no, I'm also confused by this since there so close in terms of specs.

But the i9 9900 and Ryzen 7 3700X have 65tdp

The Ryzen 7 5800X and the 3800x which I was also looking at have 105tdp.

Oops, I was looking at the wrong CPU, mb.

Honestly? Keep your 8700. A 9900 or 10700 is a waste of money and a 3700x wont be an upgrade in gaming. Only real upgrade will be 11th gen intel or Zen 3. If you had to upgrade your best options would be the 10700 or 5600x.

i7-8700 still has some chops.

It's functionally equivalent to a stock 8700k (both have same 4.3ghz all-core turbo, which is what you are seeing 99.999999% of the time), and the 8700k at stock still does really well and will be faster at gaming than a 3700x in most games.

You are probably right, I might just upgrade the ram and maybe a bigger ssd.

And save money for the gpu.

I'd skip the RAM and just get a GPU. The 8700 can saturate at least a 3070/6800 without much problem.

Update, 36 hours after this post, my mobo stopped posting and I could not find a lga1151 with x.m.p. so I ended up getting the 3700x anyway.

Wow, very strange timing lol.

Enjoy your 3700x, it’s a much better overall CPU but you won’t see an improvement in games

It's a sidegrade, but it being functional makes it a much better cpu than a dead one.
