How well would a external nvme drive work as a steam library.

Ik it won't be as fast as if it was plugged into the motherboard but will it at least be faster than a sata ssd?

i recently upgraded from using a 2tb external HDD as a big game dumb and the performance is so much better. any reason you want it external?

No more m.2 slots already using the 2 on my motherboard.

 

Originally bought the ssd for my ps5 but for my small collection of games on the ps5 storage is not an issue so now I don't know what to do with it.

If you use a USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosure attached to a USB 3.2G2 port, it will be faster than SATA (otherwise it will be about the same). It will work, but sometimes Steam forgets the library is stored there and you have to manually tell it (again).

this is going to be seen as a bad idea, but id say keep it around for your PS5. who knows how big future games will be?

You can buy a pcie to m.2 adapter for udner 20 bucks, so try that

You can use PCIe extension card. USB technically has high enough speed, but will have higher latency than an internal drive.
