what is so bad about a jacket style switch?

It's rattily and plasticy sounding, you can't lube them, and they have hysteresis (asymmetrical up and down stroke)

They're a heavier and louder sounding version of Jades, but  otherwise the same.

So I'm gonna get a Drop CTRL and I would like to know which switches are better.

I would like clicky switches that are a little but not too tactile.

My first picks are the cherry mx blue and the Kailh Speed Gold.

i think i will order a switch sampler but it would also would like to know the quality of these switches, which one is better out of the box, and which one is better once i customize it.

thanks.

Both are click jacket style switch and, IMO, are therefore terrible switches. If you want clicky look at click bar switches like Box White/Jade

what is so bad about a jacket style switch?

i think jade sounds good so i will consider.

Can't comment directly on Cherry MX Blues as I don't own them, but I do I have Kailh Speed Golds and a few Gateron Blues. You might be able to get a foggy idea of Cherry MX Blues based off Gat Blues, assuming that they're more similar than different?

  • Kailh Speed Golds: Click and tactile bump is closer to the top of the keystroke (about 0.1mm - 0.2mm down). Clicks are inconsistent between switches, and switches suffers a fair bit from stem wobble.
  • Gateron Blues: Click and tactile bump is halfway down the length of the keystroke. Keystrokes are slightly scratchy, and the switch also suffers from stem wobble. Clicky acoustics are on the deeper side, compared to the higher-pitched clicks of Kailh Speed Golds and Kailh BOX Jades/Navys.

While typing regularly, I bottom out on all my keys and can barely feel both the Kailh Speed Gold and Gateorn Blue switch's tactility (more like my fingers just brute-force their way down on the downstroke, regardless of click jackets).

TBH, I wouldn't recommend either the Speed Golds nor Gat Blues/Cherry MX Blues, but that's just my opinion. 662096681248096266.png?v=1

If you're willing to look at other options for clicky switches, I'd definitely suggest Kailh BOX Jades/Navys -- crisp, clean clicks, plus very sharp and satisfying tactility. Kailh BOX Whites have also been fairly regarded as a cheaper option.

Sound Tests

  • Keep in mind that the Gateron Blues are soldered into my Qisan Magicforce Numpad, while the Kailh Speed Gold, Kailh BOX Jade, and Kailh BOX Navy switches were tested on my GK64 (dubbed "MGK64") keyboard. I'm afraid I don't have the equipment to desolder those Gat Blues off my numpad for a fairer sound comparison. 😅
  • The Kailh BOX Jade and Kailh BOX Navy sound samples will sound remarkably similar, with the only difference between the switches being the spring weight (Jades are lighter than Navys) and the color.
Spoiler

Gateron Blue (Qisan Magicforce Numpad)

Kailh BOX Speed Gold (MGK64)

Kailh BOX Jade (MGK64)

ok. also i heard the stabilizers arent great on the CTRL. is this true?

if so, what stabilizers do you recommend
?

Well they're plate mounted stabilizers as opposed to PCB mounted (PCB mounted is better), and those 2 aren't interchangeable. So while you could replace them you can only replace them with more plate mount.

You best would be to lube them and tape/bandaid mod them.

That said, pretty much all stabilizers, even really high-end ones, are trash until you mod them.

Watch this wildcat video:

Put a piece of tape or bandaid between the stabilizer and the plate to stop of from moving around too much.

You could also put one on the PCB under the stabilizer to make the bottom out softer, but this is less important for plate mount ones

You could always go to a shop to use switch tester

Plus are you getting a prebuilt keyboard or building your own

Id recommend to hold off on the Drop CTRL and and go with the GMMK Pro instead. Better sound profile and feel generally. But I'd say hold off on the MX Blues and Speed Golds and go for Box jades instead.

IMO the GMMK Pro edges out the Drop offerings on pretty much all aspects. (Judging from reviews I've watched, never owned either)

are the GMMK Pro's stabilzers PCB mounted?

I think so.

Also since they are PCB mount your could choose to eventually replace them with high quality ones like Zeal, Durock or C3.
