When I get my hands on a 3060, will it work with my CPU?

So I was thinking about buying a 3060 when GPU prices drop, but I also realized I have a I7 4770, what you guys think?

While not the best pairing, it will work with no issues.

Yes it will work, even though there might be bottlenecks when playing at lower resolutions, such as 1080p.

Having run a GTX 980 on a Ryzen 9 3900XT, I can say that your experience shouldn't be horrible. You may find that some games that are CPU bound won't run very well, but games that are more graphically intensive and put less load your CPU will probably run quite happily at 1080p.

 

You also might find that some games will run choppy with a reasonably high framerate, and increasing the graphics quality might actually improve the experience. You might have to decrease it, in some games for smooth gameplay.

 

I would not recommend trying 4k 120hz gaming, as the CPU will hold you back... High FPS and high res are probably beyond the capability of your setup. I know that the R9 + GTX 980 was fine for 1080p, but at 1440p, it REALLY struggled. I was lucky enough to grab a Vega 64, and I can at least get 100 FPS at 1440p in most games.

 

I would recommend upgrading to a Ryzen 5 in the future, though, for better performance overall. 😄

Your systems are more different than similar.

You had a weak/old gpu with a strong cpu, he wants the contrary.

He'll be happy/happier at 4K while you were happier at FullHD

I'm willing to swim against the current.

I disagree. I have a Haswell Xeon E3 1280V3, and it runs just fine.

 

However, you are 'correct' in the fact that there won't be any performance difference. The base and boost clocks are pretty much identical between the 4770 and 1280, but you can have your 4770 run boost past the Intel boost timers, and run all core boost as long as your motherboard will allow, while the Xeon is absolutely LOCKED DOWN for boosting. It would technically be a downgrade to go to a 1280. A 4790 would be an upgrade, but the cost is absolutely not worth it.

yes but as i said it would be terrible idea to go for similar speed cpu.
