Ubuntu has no desktop environment

Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

When you have multiple DEs installed you choose the one you want on the login page, seems you didn't notice that.

Try ctrl-alt-f2 to get another terminal when you get stuck.

In a nutshell I am running dual Xeon processors and I am fairly new to Linux but I had heard that Desktop Environments could completely change the look and features of your os and I wanted to try some out, I installed kde on my Ubuntu 20.04 and  I didn’t like it so installed Xfce instead but when I rebooted I was back with the original gnome de. I then uninstalled gnome and kde, which I hoped would fix the problem however now that I have rebooted I am stuck on the loading screen and can’t get in. When I press escape I can see a command line however I can’t type anything and only the last line there is a running command prefixed by three asterisks the command is “a start job is running for hold until boot process finishes up (20min 11s/ no limit)”
