Fastest at what? Threadripper only makes sense for particular workloads that can fully utilize all those cores. It will actually end up being just equal or even slower than even something like 3600 in most games, which barely use 6 cores.

But in the case that OP actually does 8K video editing, simulations that cant be done on GPU and needs a lot of PCIE lanes, he couldve step down to a 3970x or 3960x as a lot of threadripper pros are really for prebuilts.

How'd you get a Threadripper Pro anyway. They were commercially unavailable. Linus said too. Even if you got one it would be very hard to get it's supported motherboard as the Threadripper Pro is only coming in prebuilts so the motherboard would also be like that

the 5950x is the best cpu at gaming, but it's also not aimed at gamers and it's a waste of money for gaming.

 

for purely gaming, the 5800x will give you 99% of the 5950x performance for half the price

5950X will be better suited for gaming. Yes the 3990X has many cores, but many video games prefer a couple fast cores over tons of slow cores. Also, the price for a 3990X is really absurd to use just for gaming purposes.

5950X is hands-down better.

Threadripper CPUs are better for things such as video editing that like more cores over higher clockspeeds.

or he could get the 5900x, just $100 more than the 5800x, and it'd be good for foward facing, the 5900x does have better value then the 5800x

It's crazy to think that AMD has a Ryzen that at MSRP is priced so similar to Threadripper is mind blowing. I love it!

For gaming and general use, 5950x is better.

I'm of the mindset for Threadripper and Intel's "XE" HEDT lines that if you need them, you know it.

Gaming only use up to 8 cores so far so adding more cores won't do you much, that's why we don't see much difference between a 5800x and 5950x.

Unless you're doing rendering the 3990x doesn't make sense
