Realistically, is there any point in having a higher FPS than your monitors refresh rate?

Actual_Criminal

I have a 165hz monitor and a beefy GPU so can certainly hit more than that on certain games like R6S or OW.

Is there anypoint in having more than the 165hz or is it just wasted electricity?

Reduced input lag mostly. Hardcore FPS tweekers can notice a difference, but the average person isn't going to.

Some people claim smoother gameplay, and I can see their point, but I"m not one of those people who can tell the difference between 60FPS and 160FPS.

YMMV

Depends on the game. Some games , like NMS, have input latency tied to Frame Rate. The higher the rendered frame rate the snappier mouse movement and inputs are.

However your not seeing any extra frames if ur screen is 60hz. You are ofc seeming more up to date frames, but that doesnt account for the 'snappier' inputs.

If u've never experienced this, basically any input, like mouse movement should be like a laser pointer on the screen, be it at 10 FPS or 1000FPS.

When delay is added it acts more like a Whip ..or spraying a hose around, the point ur aiming at and the mouse cursor always being out of sync ..delayed, that is until ur FPS increases.. usually to above 100 where things start feeling and looking like ur using a laser pointer.

Most games dont, and should not have, input speed based on frame rate. Generally speaking when it is, its either due to a limitation of the engine being used, or poor game design.

So in games like NMS, yes frame rates above ur native refresh are certainly wanted.

In other games however, it may make little difference.

So long as you dont suffer from screen tearing, or stutter, theres no reason to cap your FPS.

Sure it does, but at times it can also depend. Say at 60Hz you'd want 120fps stable rather than 60cap. Depends also for specific game and engine and what are the lowest frames you get in combat so you may cap at a certain fps. Seeing more fps than Hz if your monitor, yes you do see more up to date frames even though not more because Hz limit, still dependable game by game how stable it can run, as long as it's consistent and frametimes don't dance up and down largely.
