650w PSU on a 6800XT

RONOTHAN##

So I just managed to score a 6800 XT Midnight Black for one of my friends today. He had been trying to go for a 3070, but since neither of our luck has been too great, he expanded his range and managed to score a 6800XT. Because he had been going for a 3070, he only bought a 650w PSU (not by my recommendation, by another one of his friends that helped him make the parts list). I know RX 6000 series cards have slightly less spikes than their 30 series counterparts, but they can still have some spikes. My question is should I expect it to work without crashing, since it does recommend a 750w unit? I won't buy a new PSU until after I test and see if it triggers OCP, but should I be expecting to, or will it probably be fine? I just want to know if I should be helping him try to find a quality 750w or 850w to swap that out with

I haven't had mine crash yet.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

If the PSU has enough PCIe cables, it's usually enough to power the GPU. It would be fine with a 650W PSU unless you're stressing both the CPU (with power limits removed) and the GPU at max at the same time, then it may be cutting it a bit close.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

It's possible. I am also running a very slight undervolt on the GPU and my 5800x. That being said, under synthetic loads there's not a 50W difference between the 5800x and the 10700k. I did my original benchmark without undervolting anything and had no crash. AMD says it'll be rough to do, my personal experience has worked at 50W less PSU with 26W less draw, in theory.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. He already owns everything there, if he was ordering everything now I would have him go for a 750w at the minimum, but he ordered these parts since his other system died, and has been using this for the past couple months with the iGPU

All GPUs from AMD had a drop from AMD directly earlier.

OK, that's what I was hoping for. If it doesn't work, I was planning on undervolting it until I could get a better PSU in (or maybe just drive the hour up to micro center)

I would go with at least a 700 watt. I would not risk a great card like that.

Thanks. This is the second thing I've gotten from them (I got a 5900X for my personal build a couple weeks back), and it seems to me that if you can get an add to cart button, as well as a remember all your passwords/credit card info, they aren't a super hard place to get a card from

There's people that have undervolted for more performance. It might be worth looking into anyways. In order to get temps where I wanted them, I had to UV past this.

Also, set up a profile for the GPU in the Radeon software. Stock fan curve only goes up to 75%.

@static773To little voltage will just cause instability and crashing. There's very little chance of it ruining the card unless the PSU dies and sends too much power.

You're right, it is a gold PSU from seasonic so it looks fine but the headroom is always great.

I've been in 3 different discord bots for the past couple of months trying to score a couple of GPUs for me and my friends. This is the first one I've gotten from online, and also the last GPU I needed since another friend and I camped out and both got 3080s.

While 650W may be fine, I'd suggest O up the ante to a min of a good quality 750W PSU at the very minimum. It gives OP more headroom for OC, additional fans, HDDs, etc.

I put my money where my mouth is, all my rigs are powered by a min of 1kW PSU or higher. It leaves me room for upgrades, and even allows me to reuse the PSU in an entire new build if I so choose.

When you OC your CPU ofc you will get higher power consumption.

Please do check the links in in that article I had linked. Intel is known to understate its CPU power consumption. For example, Intel CPUs run at base clock and turbo clock, you can betcha 95W rating is for the 10700K at base clock of 3.8Ghz. Once you game, and it hit its Turbo clock of 5.1Ghz, do you really think it's still consuming 95W?

Up to you dude, believe what you want, if you really believe that the i7 10700K is just a 125W CPU (sorry, I think I was looking at another CPU power consumption of 95W), so be it. Here's something from Tom's Hardware (regardless, when the CPU boost its clockspeed, it consumes more than the rated 125W):

The Intel Core i7-10700K ran at 4.7 GHz during heavy all-core loads, and temperatures spiked to 76C with the Corsair H115i cooler. Power consumption peaked at 190W, which is well under the PL2 rating of 229W.
