Need Help Finishing Build with PSU and Memory

Budget: USD, not set in stone

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Destiny 2, Modded Minecraft, Borderlands 3, AI experimentation, Blu-Ray -> Plex Transcoding

Other details:

Currently running 3440x and 2560x1440 60 Hz

I've already purchased the parts below

(I was lucky enough to snag a VAG 3090)

Trying to finish off my bills with a power supply and memory but to be honest I'm getting pretty overwhelmed with decisions and what's in stock. Does anyone have any advice on what would match what I have here?

I think Trident Neo memory looks cool but I don't have my heart set on it.

I could also stomach making returns if I've made some terrible mistake.

Memory: 3600 MHz CL 16, maybe get a total of 64 gigs or higher. PSU, I'd say 1000W.

Memory: 3600 MHz CL 16, get 2 sticks of 8 gigs each. PSU, I'd say 850W at the very least.

850w isnt ehough for a 3090 and 5950x

also 16gb memory for a over 4000$ system?

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Yeah you're right, I remember Linus using 1000W or something, Ampere cards spike a lot. Imma edit that in. Also, the RAM, yeah, didn't notice. Tnx

Maybe not this psu exactly, but something like this:

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Power-Supply-Units/Power-Supply-Units-Advanced/RMx-Series/p/CP-9020094-NA

and for ram, id guess you want a 4x16kit

tridizy neo 3600 cl16 4x16is what  id do.

An 850 watt should be enough for a 3090 and a 5950x in theory. I don't know if you'd want to just get an 850 watt, but it should work as long as it's atleast a gold rated PSU... But yeah, might as well fill up all those RAM slots if you're already dumping over 4k on a build.

Also, putting a 5400rpm HDD in a build like this is just strange. Even if it's 8TB.. get a pcie adapter for m.2 drives or something if you really need that much storage.

I was thinking that might be extravagant but I have no sense of scale when stuff gets to this level, lol. Thanks for the breakdown!

I already bought it- it's from the first batch of Verified Actual Gamer cards 🙂

Is the LTT Store scalping? I hope not. Pretty sure it's a combination of the current tariffs and the 3090 Strix costing more than the average 3090.

I thought I saw something recently that populating all 4 slots was actually slower than just having 2. Is it just that it isn't twice as good? I could have overblown that in my head.

Same question as above about the RAM- if it makes sense to fill all 4 slots though I'm all for it.

I liked the idea of getting bulk storage for bit cheaper with the FuzeDrive. Is it not as magic as I thought it was?

Honestly speaking, it's okay, will do the job. Your game load times will decrease slightly going to a 7200 rpm drive. If you really want good speed for your high storage media, you have SATA SSDs, or even cheap but solid NVME SSD's like the SN550. With that said tho, when direct storage comes to PC with Nvidia/AMD, that will only be available with NVME drives, that's the thing where they pull assets directly from SSD to VRAM of GPU. So, that's that.

I'm pretty sure you know all this stuff already xD.

Did you watch the part where it shut down ? The 1000W was swapped out for a Corsair AXi 1600W. As Linus mentions in the video, on paper a 1000W should be enough, but the RTX 3000 series can spike causing the psu OCP protection to kick in.

I did, but eliminating a graphics card would give AT LEAST an extra 100 watts of headroom on a 850 watt power supply. There's plenty of people online who have successfully used a single 3090 with a 850 watt power supply. I haven't read of one person having issues with this online, and I did look. Also, I wasn't recommending this in my comment as this is definitely putting a strain on the psu. I was just stating that it should be fine in theory. I would definitely like to see if anybody has seen someone have issues with a 3090 and an 850 watt power supply as that is what I currently have, and I'd definitely scoop up a 3090 if I could find one for sale.
