Anti-Virus for pirates?

I disabled windows defender through group policy because I use Spy-Bot anti-beacon to limit the telemetry data Microsoft gets from my computers. Spy-Bot anti beacon edits the hosts file to direct the telemetry to 127.0.0.0. I had to put exclusions for Spy-Bot and the hosts file in Windows defender and things were OK for a while. After a windows mandatory update, windows defender was set back to defaults and flagged Spy-bot and my host files, instantly quarantined them, and took actions to delete them with-out me okaying it. I tried in vain to make windows defender play nice with my edited hosts file but it didn't matter, the only way it wouldn't flag it was if I turned it off. SOOO I went to try another Anti-virus software, I decided to try Bitdefender. So after downloading and installing, it too flagged Spy-Bot and my hosts file, but it also flagged and deleted 7Zip and a Firefox installer. WTF? When I tried to re-download a 7Zip installer I wasn't allowed to even save it to my downloads folder while Bitdefender was running. I would like to know what 3rd party anti-virus software will play with my rules. ie. If I exempt a file or folder it permanently exempts it, also if it flags something it better not delete the file without asking. It is OK if it is pay software, I know good things aren't always free. Sry for the inflammatory title, was just trying to get something that stands out. 🙂

It's funny because your antivirus sounds more like a virus at this point. Personally I would run the windows 10 debloat script and that will disable telemetry and updates that might undo what you have done. As for the AV do you need real time protection or just scans? I personally hate real time protection and on my sea worthy PC a pirate would favor I use the free version of malwarebytes and do a full scan once a week

@Procyan NLN, just to let you know that host file protection is normal, it's been added by MS in Defender (and other anti-virus) for about a year now ;

Not sure why your Bitdefender install is tripping, but it shouldn't remove applications like this, unless you've downloaded them from unofficial sites and they contain viruses (that's totally a thing, and by the title, I'm guessing that's what is happening here).

 

If you need a software, get the official version, if you want pirated versions and need help with that, then I'm afraid we can't help (see the Community Standards)

can't you change the AV settings so that it asks you what to do when a "harmful file" is detected?

I hadn't heard of the debloat script. I will definitely look it up. Unfortunately I cannot use another operating system, I have some software that only works on Windows. I still work frequently with Windows 7 and some of the older Army radios cannot work with anything else, reliability.  

I got 7Zip from 7zip.org and Firefox from Mozilla.org. I'm not asking about where to get/find pirated software, like I mentioned, it was just a funny title.

 

It was during the initial scan that bitdefender flagged and removed the files, before I was able to change the settings. so I uninstalled bitdefender.

I had used malewarebytes before but had forgotten about it. I'm going to give it a shot. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Malwarebytes isn't really an AV, you can try a few free AV that have good reviews ;

I would avoid AVG, while it's well rated as an anti-virus, it has become a nagware/adware (when I had it, it would install a Chrome extension that was impossible to remove as it would reinstall after every reboot and you would get false positive ; it said there were issues with the PC and to fix that you needed the full version).
