I turned my Diamond Play Button into a Gaming PC

AlexTheGreatish

Come on bruh, the case is exactly M1 Mac Mini sized and that is a lot more powerful system than that i7

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

Kudos聽to Alex!! That is a pretty impressive project, one of the best you guys have done in my聽opinion.

How is the copper on alu holding up, does it transfer the heat to the alu enough after running for a period of time? and what temperature does the alu case/chassis reach?

Seams like that is聽ws2812b's !? I havn't seen you guys play around with ws2812b's a lot. Is there a reason for that?

I honestly think there is a world in visual difference using that vs some stock led strip. And it is super easy to make and control. Just聽a esp32 with WLED firmware on it and controlling if from a webbrowser or phone app. You can easy hook that up in 5 min.

Cheers聽

In regards to Linus' soldering, I will give it a pass for this project, but it sure isn't pretty. Could need a touch more flux, or rather, a fair bit less dwelling with the iron as to not have all the flux burn of and the solder thereafter聽oxidize. (though, I do electronics manufacturing professionally, so I build things to a standard. The solder quality shown in the video doesn't pass in production.)聽I myself would have though just used a female pin header and soldered the wires to it for a nice pluggable connection. (or more likely used a crimped connection for even easier assembly.)

Also, kind of irks me to see Alex use the deburring tool with chips flying while Linus stands right besides him without eye protection. (I would consider the risk negligible, but to be fair, in a work shop, eye protection is always useful.)

But interesting project, and I will make a guess that the case will likely offer a fair bit of thermal mass, so I suspect that it will need a bit of time before it starts throttling down the clocks.

The real question though that the project is done, will it see any use or will it just sit somewhere in a showcase?

Surely it wouldn't be torn apart and scraped for parts like other past projects?

If you found my answer to your post helpful, be sure to react or mark it as solution馃槃

This is one project that won't be disassembled. Like the gold controller they did recently. I'm fairly sure both will be displayed (behind glass!) on the next LTX, probably next year?

In some apps certainly it is but this was called gaming PC and M1 is shit at 99% of the games as most macs are, due to it being m1 or due to not being available on the platform.聽

They can thunderbolt external GPU and have sic small factor gaming PC

Nicely done and pretty tidy. For the RGB situation, I would recommend you something like this:

holysn0w.com/muhrgbproject.html

(guide on how to make something like it)

My recommendation is to use WLED with a esp8266 or preferably a esp32, cuz the effects you can make is just awesome. Stuff like plasma effects etc. WLED聽is open source too, and it is easy and ready to use from start from a web browser or android/ios app. And it聽is something that is being聽developed on all the time.

But it can get as advanced as you want it if you really wanna dive down in it like control it over fx.聽MQTT and integrate聽it with fx. OpenHAB, or Blynk, or UDP control聽or trigger/banging and I had even some kind of聽success with making it trigger with OSC protocol.聽ORCA,聽TidalCycles and SonicPi live programming can work with it too if your into music programming.

WLED have some聽excellent guides and a great community build around it.

In case you were wondering how you can 3D scan a mirror surface: dulling spray!

If you're doing photogrammetry yourself, white hairspray is accessible and is a massive help. You can stock up on some during Halloween sales. Doing a full coat of white and then some black sprinkles on top from a distance can improve the result further. You can wash it off with warm soapy water later. Even clear hairspray, sprayed under an angle and from a greater distance to let it clump in the air while it slowly falls, is better than nothing.

Professionals in the 3D scanning business have specialised sprays and powders which are even easier to remove without damaging the subject.

You absolutely can't scan a mirror-like surface without a dulling coating.

About 3D scanning. You don't need to scan it. The shape is super simple. It's easier to measure and rebuild the model, than clearing up the scan.

If you have the means, why not scanning? They have more opportunities for access to things like that than they have production time, and employee time including overhead costs is just scary expensive.

Cleaning up a scan to production quality is a fool's errand indeed, nasty business. But having a good scan you can skip the tedious measurement which just always takes up a lot more time and verification than you anticipate. And indeed if you don't need to reproduce the subject faithfully, but just need to plan around it, to make some holes in it, you don't need a super clean model, just cut off everything loose outside the object of interest and you're done.

Does the special paste do some magic that lets you solder aluminium in presence of oxygen?

Also where DID you end up putting those antennas?

Chucked the WiFi antennas behind the IO shield, works pretty good.

Why did you cool down CPU through the heat pipes instead of making a protrusion on the enclosure aluminium and cooling it directly with the enclosure? So much of wasted space and a bit of wasted cooling performance.

There would have been no space for a fan, and also we needed a spot to hide wires.

Man, I just don't understand why LMG completely wiped out the Verified Actual Gamer clips in the videos. I can't find them anywhere.... That's kinda SUS?!?!?!

Just so people don't think they have a chance to get the drop when it's long gone.聽 Also it is ~2min that's not actual content and don't want people dropping off.

Hey Alex, it's awesome that you replied, thank you so much, now I get it. But, I also have another question.... Why did I type in lttstore.com/3070ba and it actually went on a page? I mean, it actually loaded a page on the site even though it still showed error 404, but when you enter a non-valid URL, the address bar doesn't change, and it just loads the error... That's very interesting, don't ya think? 馃槈

By the way, is there ANY chance whatsoever that I could become a subtitle guy, because I've been watching all of the videos with subtitles and noticed plenty of errors, which, when you think about it, maybe affects some people and they get confused... I'm 13 y. o. LMAO, but I am not a regular American who doesn't know english and says "like", "stuff", and "thingy" every other word xD. And I'm also Russian, heh. It would be a great opportunity for me to earn some bucks. I mean, that would be just... amazing,聽because I have a dream of building a white PC (R5 5600x + RTX 3080 ROG STRIX WH), maybe it would finally come true... I don't even know what I'm hoping for, but, just asking... I know ALMOST聽everything about PCs and gadgets (terms,聽brands and lots of everything else). And it would be awesome to at least somehow become a part of LMG! Alex, you're really talented, especially in the Diamond play button video and others. Whew, that's about it! Hope you read this.馃槈
