Is it possible to turn wired keyboard and mouse to wireless?

Chiyawa

Like the name suggest, is it possible to do so? I heard of LEX and REX (Local EXtender and Remote EXtender), a two device where you can extend USB hub connection over Ethernet cable, I wonder if there is a wireless one.

Rather than buying a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I can use my existing wired gaming keyboard and mouse everywhere in range.

Regards,

Chiyawa

A "wireless USB hub" seems to be a thing that exists or at least existed, but I can't actually find one available to buy anywhere.

It works (worked) by converting the USB device input into some form proprietary data that is sent over WiFi to a computer running a host driver, that basically acts like a virtual device translating the data sent over WiFi back into the original input. While I have no experience with such a thing, I can spot *many* potential problems there. I would imagine reliability and compatibility would be huge issues. Latency was likely also a big problem. My best guess as to the lack of ability to actually purchase such a thing (at least easily) is that it was in fact a huge dumpster fire, and companies gave up on trying to sell them.

In short, I think this isn't going to be a viable thing.

I see. So you can use your WiFi router that support USB as wireless Hub... I think it may be feasible.

Still, having a big device is... Well, not convenient.

I actually have a technicolor router, but that router, if not mistaken, supports USB printer only. Haven't tested if it works on keyboard or mouse.

Yeah, I think so. Internet didn't give me a relevant result. Hmm...

Why add latency and complexity to a good gaming keyboard and mouse, for extra money? Just buy a wireless gaming desktop set, at that rate. They don't have to be bluetooth to be wireless, you know.

I don't think wifi is suitable for low latency devices. It may work, if you don't mind a bit of lag.

Point to point wifi connection can be 3-5ms, especially when you are also transferring files, that is unacceptable for mouse / keyboards.

Yeah, but it's just that I already have a good keyboard and mouse. Buying a new one seems, well, pointless. And since I used to this gaming keyboard, buying a new keyboard means you need to get used to the new keyboard. Furthermore, I have set quite many macro keys to my existing keyboards already. This also same for mouse, as I set 1 of the macro button as Copy (Ctrl + C) and another one as Paste (Ctrl + V).

Anyway, a wireless gaming keyboard (Bluetooth or with the dongle one) can still be expensive, especially those that has macro keys and uses mechanical keys.

So yeah. I mean you can buy a new one if you like, but I felt pointless (at least for me) as I already have a good keyboard that has its macro keys customised and used to the layout of the keyboard.

Oh, about latency, don't worry. I'll be using mainly for typing while in Bluetooth mode. Actually, I'm using it for my Surface Pro 4, which it only has 1 USB port. I found myself stuck between choosing to use the mouse or the keyboard. USB hub is a quick fix but add more cables to it, and that is also if you remember to bring your USB hub along. Initially, I thought of buying a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse as well, but the cheap one doesn't give tactile and clicking feedback and while those who do cost a lot.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that, but I'm not using for gaming in this case.

I see.

According to one of the Amazon review (https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Keyboard-Converter-Smartphone/dp/B07V4STT3T/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8), it seems that this device emulates using game controller protocols instead of Bluetooth pass-through. I'm still searching for more reviews to see if this product work as intended.

Yeah, even in official site, this is just intended to be used as game controller.
