CPU + Motherboard Combo for 1080p 144hz

Hello everybody,

I'm planning to upgrade from a Z370 and 8400 to a new cpu and motherboard. Do you guys have any recommendations for a budget combo for a 1080p 144hz? I currently have a GTX 1060 6gb but next year I will be upgrading it for sure.

Are there any other tasks that you'll be doing, besides gaming? Also, what would your approximate budget be? I'd probably recommend a 5600X or 10600K.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Honestly, you should probably keep the motherboard and grab an 8700k if you're on a budget. That will give you the most cost effective upgrade. Also a 6 core 12 thread cpu is more than enough for gaming right now.

You can't do anything to that gpu, it's already max out with your current specs.

For future parts, any 6 cores + 12 threads or better cpu will do.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Gaming mostly, but emulation is also on my book. To be honest when it comes to budget I don't know, it can't be that much and motherboard needs to cost 150-200 usd because my country's customs doesn't allow to bring more than that amount without outrageous taxes. My father is bringing me the cpu from the usa so the taxes thing does not apply.

I'm upgrading it next year to 3060 ti or 3070

I can't remember if the 8th and 9th gen intel chips are compatible with the same motherboards. If so, then the 9700k will be slightly better in some games since it has two more cores. You might able to get a cheap 9900k which would be the best option, but only if its not much more than an 8700k or 9700k.

Before you go with a 9900k make sure you motherboard can handle it by looking at the reviews, specifically how good the VRMs are. If you aren't overclocking too much you should be fine with anything that has decent vrms.

the i9 9900k is 375 usd aprox. on amazon and the 9700k is 290-320. The problem with the i9 9900k is that I have a Cryorig H7 and an Asus Prime Z370-A.

Thats not worth it for the 9900k. If you're willing to go to Ebay you can grab it used with buyer protection. Otherwise I would go the 9700k since it will better match your existing hardware.

That motherboard is fine for 9900k or 9700k, although that price isnt good for 9900k.

The cooler is not great for 9900k but should easily handle stock 9700k

Big nerd.

This user mentioned that they are buying in another country (but didn't mention which) so I'm not sure if $375 is a bad price or not. But for a gaming PC the i7 seems quite alright, after a BIOS update.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

The price for the 9900k on amazon is for the us, but yeah, the i7 9700k is a better deal and seems like a good jump from the 8400 and it will serve me well for the rest of my pc lifespan i suppose (next upgrade will be a whole new pc)
