Google Pixel 4a (5G) vs Google Pixel 5

Statik

Hey guys,

My iPhone 8 is just over 3 years old, and I've put it through the ringer, and I think it's time for a new phone. I'm debating between the 4a (5G), and the 5. "Regular pricing" is as follows;

4a (5g) - $33.34/mo ($800)

5 - $39.59/mo ($950)

However, I can get them for the following prices

4a - $20/mo ($480) + $100 Costco Shop Card

5a - $33.29/mo ($800)

Since I can get the 4a for so much cheaper, is the Pixel 5 really worth all the extra doe? If I'm not mistaken the only differences are

> 4a has 60hz vs 5's 90hz

> 5 is water resistant, 4a is not

> 4a has no reverse charging

> 4a has 200MA smaller battery (3,800 vs 4,000)

> 4a has 6gb ram vs 5's 8gb.

Any other differences? Or opinions? I don't really game on my phone at all, and I plan to run a custom ROM if that matters.

Thanks

What I do when buying a phone i look at what features i am going to use for instance you might not really use the reverse charging. Also bear in mind that the pixel 5 will have a longer update life as it newer. As you aren't gaming its not really worth to have a higher refresh rate screen and will you use 5gz.

I mean I'll use 5g if it's an option. It's not really widespread here yet, but I have a feeling it's going to become bigger in the upcoming years.

I don't really care about the reverse charge, and I feel RAM and refresh rate won't really effect me in a noticeable way. As long as the camera is the same, and the battery life is good, then I don't think I'll care much.

I plan to de-google, so I'm not torn up over google not releasing updates on certain things.

Make the decision based on the following the 4a will likely last 2-3 years and the 5 will likely last 3-4 years. Do you pay extra and keep the phone longer or pay less and replace it sooner.

Personally I would probably take the 4a and upgrade in 2022 or 2023 to the cheapest flag ship of that year.

Remember that the Pixel 4a 5G also doesn't have wireless charging.

With that said: for that kind of price difference, go for the 4a 5G unless you can't go without one of the 5's features. It'll be fine for your particular needs. Just try to avoid using it in the rain.

I chose the 5 over the 4a 5G for specific reasons

- I prefer the metal frame, gives the phone a bit more integrity and durability

- Under display speaker so dirt and gunk doesn't collect, and it doesn't sound terrible

- 90Hz is very smooth

- The more RAM will come in handy as newer editions of Android are released

- Thin bezels

- Size (I needed it small)

- IP68 is always a nice feature

- Has wireless charging in case the main port gets damaged

It ain't worth $699 but I got it for $449 so am very happy with the purchase. I think it'll have a better chance of lasting longer and being more relevant as time goes forward. In your case the price delta is only $150, I'd say get the 5. The audio is probably my least favorite aspect but it's not as bad as people say. Perfectly fine for everyday use.

I ended up getting the 5 anyways. Stock on the 4a 5G was non-existent.
