Assuming the worst for a moment if you would.  What client would people jump to?

i dislike facebook but there's nothing wrong with fact checking, there are some crazy discord servers out there that discuss the wildest conspiracies...

Discord Inc./Hammer & Chisel selling Discord is fully what we could've expected, as I remember the Discord founder did that with a previous endeavor too. Make something, make it big and cash out.

Surprised it took them this long, although I expect 2020 has been a pretty good year in terms of new customers.

It was going to happen sooner or later. Whenever a voice/IM client gets interesting enough a bigger company takes it over and ruins it. Won't be the first, wont be the last.

If it's done with honesty that's true, however......

I've seen them come in and say something thats true isn't and also try to perpretrate a blatant falsehood as "Truth" when it's not, even when viable proof against what they are trying to pass off as truth exists.

As for Discord, it's a jungle in there.

I can absolutely see Amazon jumping on this, especially after killing Twitch's shoddy Discord clone in February of 2019.

The only company that I can think of that might bring a positive spin to Discord is Valve. It's unlikely to happen, but a man can dream.

welp, if facebook buys it, i'm cooked. maybe teamspeak?? Idk, honestly, discord shouldn't sell. Seems like something facebook would "facebook-ify" just like insta, whats-app, oculus. Facebook and gaming don't mix, and when they are mixed, it has the reaction of an h-bomb in their face (normally)

They don't really have a choice if they're not profitable, it's either sell to someone with enough money to fund it until it is profitable, or go under.

yeah, I wouldn't mind them throwing in some non intrusive ads, and maybe moving s'more features under nitro. That, or cap users to being able to only make a certain amount of "free" servers before they have to pay. As long as it is sustainable, and doesn't look like EA made it would be ok with me.

Their shoddy Discord clone was called Curse before they bought it. Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Honestly I wouldn't mind if Microsoft bought Discord. They've been fairly hands off on most of their recent acquisitions (I'm not including Skype), but with that being said I don't see where it would fit in their corporate ecosystem (Xbox integration?/Windows 10 Social features?).  On the other hand, Facebook I would mind but the platform would be a treasure trove of data for them so it makes complete sense for them to acquire it.  Amazon I hate with a burning passion, but other than Twitch integration I don't see a specific reason they would want it.

If it's Microsoft I'm okay with it. Their acquisition of GitHub went well and they even made private repositories free!

 

I was nervous about that but honestly GitHub stayed the same with some improvements.
