Why not sell an item immediately, make profit and buy more to sell more? Cards will be sold way above MSRP anyway, it doesnt make sense for them to wait.

Something like pre-ordering, or a wait-list?

They make the same amount of money if they just wait until they have them in stock. Why bother?

It would most likely lead to a huge number of customer complaints if they allowed reservations and then it took weeks or even months for the order to be fulfilled. You might be happy with it, but most people would probably end up pestering their support at least once a week which would ultimately cost them money.

~edit: It also creates the issue of how to handle price changes. If you pre-order at some price and then the price goes up, do they take the loss? Do they not fulfill your order until the price goes down again? Do they ask for more money? What if the price goes down instead, do they adjust yours? Or are you going to cancel? Do they take money now and send the item as soon as it becomes available, or do they not ask for money and instead notify you and ask for payment, potentially binding stock for some time until they can be certain you are going to pay/not pay?

They have no issue moving whatever they have in stock anyway, so no need for them to think about this situation at all and just sell whatever they have at whatever price is current.

Way too many logistical issues, as @Eigenvektor pointed out. You also have to set up the database, manage it...it's a lot more work than you seem to think.

People are increasingly impatient, and a handful of mad people can seem like a million when they get on social media and everyone starts reporting on it. PR nightmare.

It's just a bad idea all around.

They can't do this if even the shop doesn't know if and when they'll get stock. Shops here did this in the beginning, but have long stopped taking preorders because of the above mentioned situations. Now everything goes to the preorders that were in already and have stated they'll only start accepting new orders once all perorders have been fulfilled and they have some (outsight on) stock again.

If there isn't fee involved, such system can easily be misused. Like creating hundreds of dummy entries. Having a reservation fee would help to root out most of the bots. But mostly such systems are used for reserve for pickup only.
