Anybody here ditched desktop gaming and went laptop?

How long ago did you switch and how do you like it so far?

I'm looking into that plunge.  Why?

I can't buy any gpu unless I'm willing to get r*ped by a scalper.

Less desktop space.

I know they can't touch a desktop in performance but

Gaming laptops are becoming a better deal day after day.

I'm currently looking at an MSI:

10th gen i7

RTX 2070 non mq

16gb ddr4

512gb m.2

1tb hdd

144hz screen

$1,200

I know for $1,200 I could probably build the desktop equivalent with an RTX 3060.  But it doesn't look like I'll be able to grab one at msrp until fall this year.  At least.

Which msi? They have a lot of models that struggle due to cooling problems and thus deliver a pretty poor gaming experience.

As in laptop gaming did that in 2015. Liked it a lot being able to just go. Now that I am more stationary I am mainly on a desktop but miss my laptop now that it broke a couple months ago and am buying a new one soon as I'm still deciding which 3000 series laptop I want to buy.

3 years ago because moving a heavy ATX build over 10,000km away into the dorm of University is unrealistic.

It's nice that the monitor has better quality than my old TN stuff, but performance has worsened (since it's 2600k and GTX1070 to 8750H and GTX1060) and dust degrades its cooling way faster (on top of already poor cooling to begin with, CPU always thermal throttles when the GPU is also under high load). I also don't like software limitations on laptops, I have to be super careful about software updates because a lot of it requires driver and BIOS update from HP. As you know, Windows is an absolute b**** when it comes to installing updates without user's consent.

You can get a gaming laptop with a 10th gen i5, GTX 1650, 17" 120hz ips panel, 8gb ram, 512m.2 for as little as around $750.

Not too long ago you could barely get a laptop with those trashy "M" gpus for a grand.  lol

With today's gpu crisis you'd be lucky to snag a GTX 1650 for $500.

The primary advantage of a laptop is the portability. If you're not leveraging that advantage, I do not recommend a laptop instead of a desktop. Waiting until desktop parts are reasonably priced is recommended.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

It's nice on performance and thermals, but is also louder than average and battery life is hardly good. Your choice then.

Unless you spend an inordinate amount of money on a mega chungus gaming laptop, kiss the following things goodbye:

Gsync (though you can still use GSync with an external Gsync capable monitor)

Decent temps (expect both CPU and GPU to be around 80, sometimes 90 depending on how thin the laptop is)

Any BIOS control

Any semblance of silence while gaming, hope you like headphones

Screen real estate

Mech keyboard

Desktop level performance (X60 chips will be the closest you will get to desktop level performance, and it will decline from there with X70 and X80 chips primarily because of power and temperature limitations. Mobile CPUs are also partially to blame.)

I hate laptops if that wasn't already clear. I had to switch to a laptop for a little over a year when I moved and I was miserable the entire time. IMO you are making a rash decision and need to have patience. Laptops depreciate very quickly, if you buy one to use for a little while before you get a real build going, you will lose a lot of money. If you intend to use it for several years, you will have a subpar experience AND lose a lot of money. In my experience laptops always perform worse than you think they will. I bought a laptop with a 9750H and a 2070, and it was barely better than my 5 year old desktop that was running a 980Ti and 4790K.

I guess I didnt consider the current gpu market as id never buy hardware during a downturn that made bad hardware seem as if it were good.
