Probably not. Gpu uses math to make pictures. Gpu uses math to make blockchains.

No it's all just math at the end of the day. Crypto is not solely to blame for the shortage either.

As others said it's just math, so it's unlikely to have a specific mining on/off switch.

 

This made me wonder though (general question). If I'm not mistaken, before GPU Boost for a while Nvidia had throttling hardcoded when it detected e.g. Furmark or OCCT. Was that then also just by detecting the extreme power draw and load from these programs rather than actually detecting Furmark or OCCT itself?

Yes. They're "power virus" applications, Nvidia has the GPUs set up to recognize that sort of abnormal power draw and throttle right away. It's not recognizing the specific math either application does.

Nvidia tried at the driver level but it was broken. In terms of hardware, there are many games and applications that take advantage of CUDA/OpenCL so you can't just not have those.

 

It is a boom-bust economy. Prices will stabilize eventually. With Ethereum moving to Proof-of-Stake, mining will become obsolete (for the most part).

When ETH goes full PoS miners will just move. there is no reason to expect miners to say "oh ETH is not mineable anymore guess I'll quit mining now". No they will just adapt like any intelligent person would and start mining a different coin like RVN or something whatever is the most profitable.

Cryptos like Monero are designed to only be mineable on CPUs. However miners don't care and will mine whatever's the most profitable.

If you feel like going back to the pre-pixel shader days, then sure, you can absolutely make a GPU that is unable to perform any sort of mining at all. Though a theoretical fixed-function GPU that doesn’t make use of programmable shaders would have to rely on massively scaling up rasterization performance, and have the bandwidth to match, as achieving effects via numerous overlapping layers is very bandwidth heavy. 
 

The closest thing to such would actually be the Playstation 2. The GS has a 2.4 Gigapixel fill rate, and had a VRAM chunk that reached about 50 GB/s, and this is for sub-480P (often less than 480i) resolutions. Just to maintain the same level of visuals while rendering at 4K seems to calculate at a minimum of 1.33TB/s (that’s Terabytes folks) memory bandwidth. And we’re still at a 16 bit color depth to boot. 
 

There’s a reason we moved to programmable GPUs.
