Are Chromebooks that Bad?

So its the age old... not really debate at this point. but if you look closer they can be amazing work and school laptops

Chromebooks are dope, most people hate em cause they don't judge them for what they are designed to do. Yeah it's kind of a niche thing but there is a very large amount of people (even excluding schools/students) that can have all their computing needs satisfied with a basic internet browsing device. Chromebooks excel at this.

Nothing wrong with chromebooks for the price, especially considering they're now capable of running Linux software as you say.

 

If you try to do any proper gaming or content production work, you will quickly become frustrated with the poor availability of good-quality software and the inability of the hardware to run it, however.

Currently using a chromebook with a touchscreen for my studies. I use OneNote. There's plenty to do on a chromebook even without virtualized windows.

Depends on what you want to do with them really. If you need to run specific windows apps then yeah they suck. If all runs on android, web and linux then they are at the very least alright. Just don't get the lowest end low spec bad ones really.

If said twelve year olds actually thought about it for a bit, they'd realise that they can run Fortnite, you just have to jump through some hoops because of Epic Game's spat with Google.

I'm assuming you mean the mobile version, because Fortnite won't run in Linux via Wine because of the anticheat. But yes, I guess you could say they run Fortnite, lol

I wonder if anyone's tried running Windows in VirtualBox in the Linux subsystem on a Chromebook? But then, some anticheats are set up to refuse to operate in any virtualised environment, sooooo....

I've often looked at them but never wanted to get one. The cheap ones use cheap memory that I don't trust to even have in my phone, if you get ones with decent spec they're rivaling the price of a laptop so why not just get something that's all around more useful? For the cheaper ones, a used laptop is a far better choice.

The cynical part of me wants to suggest that Chromebooks skimp on the internal storage because they want you to pay for Google cloud storage

Chromebooks are highly underrated in my book. Some models you can use 8 hours a day for over 3 days and not have to charge it. You can also install android apps on it now and run them natively, o you can install crouton and dual boot and have linux.

It's not even the amount though, it's the type. eMMC. It's trash and I wouldn't have it on anything that didn't need it.

Define "regular work laptop". Otherwise there's no way to say yes or no. For my work a Chromebook doesn't work for me, but I certainly do see their appeal for a lot of things.

my opinion:

they are good but sometimes a shit ton pricier i would like to pay for, like $380 about just for a celeron n4020 no hdmi (two usb type c) and some just garbage 4gb ram ive used one the wifi on it can sometimes like not give consistent connection, also why a 768p screen, color accuracy is also garbage, and thats for almost $400, if i could just get $200 more i could afford a gaming laptop/work desktop lower end (a new one at $400 you can get an older anything laptop)

You see, work tasks differ widely between people. I don't need to do CAD work or anything, it's just that the type of work I do on a laptop isn't easily done on a Chromebook if at all. For remote meetings, documents and the like a Chromebook is fine.

My school makes them nearly unusable because of all the things they have installed on them. It's also funny cause they disabled all apps, themes, and extensions from the chrome web store.
