Looking for advice on an AMD budget build

Hi everyone!

So last year I made a compromise and settled on an old MSI Z270-A Pro motherboard and an i5-6600K. To say this setup sucks is a minor understatement, if I try to game, my CPU hit's %100 on all cores.

So I want to upgrade to an AMD setup, but my budget is, (ahem), tight. I want to try to keep the MB around $150 - $200 CDN and my budget for the CPU will be in the same ballpark. Does anyone have any suggestion on hardware that will fit into that price range? BTW, I have no problem with used hardware.

Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure about the $ CDN, but still going to give you some suggestions.

For the motherboard, you could get a normal board or a gaming one. Not going to specify which exactly, because there are a lot of B550/B550M boards out there which are below $100 or just around $100 or more (sorry for using American dollars for reference). Depends also on if you need a ATX or mATX board.

As for your CPU, you could settle on a used Ryzen 5 1600 AF or 2600. Those will be around $100 or even less if you can find them. Other options are also the Ryzen 7 1700 and 1800. As for the newer ones, good options are also the Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X, unfortunately they are hardly in stock for over a year now. Sometimes you find used ones, mostly for the 3100. These vary around $100, sadly really hard to find for $99.99 MSRP.

Finally the last option is trying to find a Ryzen 5 3500X, but these are quite rare and only on the used market the right price it can be a deal for under $150.

This is not the best time to get a low end amd pc 😕 The chepeast cpu which has not spiked in price is the 3600. Your best option for that price is an i3-10100

I think you can just go with a ryzen5 2600x or just ryzen5 3400g

nope, the 2600x is 250 cad and 3400g spiked to 309. He's probably just better off saving his money and staying with his 6600k.

Edit: The pcpartpicker list below actually shows how you can get away with a 3600 by spending less on a motherboard, and the 3600 would be enough to justify an upgrade

To expand on this, why the heck isn't AMD making new APUs anymore for consumer market? ESPECIALLY NOW they are needed more than ever.

The only options are outdated and overpriced Zen+, and grey market OEM chips.
