What do the numbers and letters for Wi-Fi cards mean?

Hello there!

I was wondering what all the letters and numbers for Wi-Fi cards mean, for example: Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax). What does 6E and 802.11ax mean? I know absolutely nothing about Wi-Fi cards and similar, so please explain it as simpe as possible.

Those are standards defined by Wifi Alliance (and previously IEEE). 

A good starting point.

6E is the generation of Wifi and the small letters are the frequency band designations.

 

Google it for exact stats.

Wi-Fi 6 is a simpler term than saying 802.11ax. It's all a standard, with names such as Wi-Fi 6 being used to help consumers and less-tech savy individuals get the hardware they need.

I may be stupid, but at least I'm not an idiot.

That's Li-Fi - wireless over lightsource i think.

Wifi is still over radio waves.

But now, I'm not an expert...

Oh yes thats right - apperantly there are speeds up to 224 GB/s possible (yes, gigabyte, not bit). That is insane. Imagine using this for downloading games...

Would be nice, but no dice unless you have corresponding internet connection speeds.

Of course, the 224GB/s are under perfect conditions and will not be possible to achieve for the average user.

6 is the generation of wifi, 6E is an enhancement by introducing 6GHz wifi in addition to existing 2.4GHz ax and 5GHz ax improvements.
