5800X & RTX 3070 Cooling

flickofdawrist

My PC parts are arriving soon. I currently have a Dark Rock Pro 4. I was wondering if I would need a better cooler.

I'm thinking of buying the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh Perfomance case, but I've heard there are some cases when the 5800X has really high temps and might start thermal throttling. Also I'll have the 3070 Founder's Edition, which also has mediocre temps.

Is the cooler & case combo good enough for my build?

@TVwazhere maybe you have some tips for me?

Arguably, you're putting yourself in one of the best positions you can in terms of air cooling for your system, as the Lancool 2 Mesh ranks as one of the best performing airflow cases on the market.

The only thing better than a Dark Rock pro 4 cooler would be a 360mm AIO (A Noctua NH-D15 or other big tower cooler would be mostly a side grade if you're thermal throttling) but I wouldnt see a reason that in that situation, you would be unless you were trying to overclock the snot out of the chip with very high voltage.

Awesome. Hopefully I hit silicon lottery for the 5800X. Also, do you think there's any improvement that can be done to the Lian Li Mesh Performance case? Or is it better at stock?

There are minute changes you can make to the cooling depending on what you want to prioritize.

For example, adding a fan on top of the PSU shroud actually helps GPU temps since the air can be drawn in through the side mesh's on each side of the PSU shroud

 Adding a 120mm fan on top of the PSU shroud is a cheap way to improve the case’s airflow even more, and it takes advantage of the mesh side panel Lian Li has added.

It would help GPU temps but it would make CPU temps worse, according to this picture, wouldn't it?

So then is the bottom fan worth it considering the high temperatures of the 5800x? Maybe if I'm lucky enough to get low temps on my 5800x, then I could sacrifice some °C from the CPU to help the GPU temps, right?

@TVwazhere forgot to quote.

In this particular instance yes, because the bottom fan is blowing more of that hot air being exhausted from the GPU up into the CPU tower cooler.

That's up to you in the end. I would suggest building the system first with stock configurations, get a baseline temperature reading under load, and then experiment from there if you think CPU temps are fine but GPU temps are too warm (or vice versa).

Do you have any recommendations for the fan? or it doesn't really matter that much. Does it have to be an expensive one?
