Windows Photos app suddenly stops reading HEIC files

A few days ago, my computer was able to read HEIC files, but now it stopped working. This is the same file that I was able to open a few days ago, but now it can't open the file.

I have HEIF Image Extensions installed on my computer, and I tried to reset this and the Photos app, but it still can't read HEIC files.

I'm planning to reinstall the HEIF Image Extensions, but the "Uninstall" button is grayed out, how can I reinstall it?

Update:

  • Tested it on another system / PC that can read HEIC file using the Photos App, and it got the same issue. Now I think that this might be a bug in the Photos app or Windows updates, since both systems just got updated to "KB4601382".
  • I tried to reinstall the HEIF Image Extensions using PowerShell.

This is what I had done for reinstalling HEIF Image Extensions:

  • Run PowerShell as Administrator
  • Find the package name using this command
Get-AppxPackage –AllUsers | Select Name, PackageFullName
  • The package name was " Microsoft.HEIFImageExtension_1.0.40392.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe".
  • Uninstall / remove the package using this command
    Remove-AppxPackage -Package " Microsoft.HEIFImageExtension_1.0.40392.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe" -AllUsers
  • Reset the Photos app by going to
Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Photos > Advanced Options > Reset

  • Restart the computer

  • Go to Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extensions again
