AMD Announces The RX 6700 XT, "Available" March 18 For $479

Summary

AMD announced the RX 6700 XT today for $479. The date it will be "available" on will be March 18. This card has 12GB of GDDR6, 40 compute units, a 2424 MHz Game Clock, 96MB of infinity cache, a 230W board power, and supports AMD Smart Access Memory. In house benchmarks show it performing around the same as an RTX 3070 at 1440p max settings.

My Thoughts

Yet another card we won't be able to buy. If the performance is close to the in house benchmarks, it should be pretty good in performance as it matches a 3070 at 1440p max.

Interesting they compared it to a 2080S then 3070. So... roughly 3070 performance class, at 3070 (launch) pricing. Who wants to guess where pricing actually ends up? To be fair, I think outside of nvidia's reference version, most were more expensive at launch. And of course, recent pricing is way above that. Will we see (m)any 6700XT at the headline pricing, or will it be way above that? Counting official sellers only, no scalpers.

This might be a good replacement for my 1070 with it having 12GB of VRAM. Ray tracing won't be a thing for 2-3 years yet and I'll probably be building a new computer in that time. AIBs will screw the prices on the custom models though. Only thing I will miss is NVIDIAs encoder but I don't stream so I guess its not that important.

It might be like RTX 30 in that the FE is now the only card at the original launch price and all the AIB cards are $100+ more.

Yeah the "reference" card is gonna be unobtainium and every AIB card is more like $550 and up to $600 for the high end versions.

I miss when GPUs were at more reasonable prices, the 5700XT launched at $399 for the blower version and there were AIB cards for $450 or less.

Depending on the other components obviousy. I'd not pay more than $180€ for GTX 1660 even at this date.

But who knows when prices stabilize/lower - maybe next month or next year..

I have got my new prebuilt PC with Asrock Challenger 5700 XT last November ... late January the GPU broke so I RMA'd it and got same model card as replacement (which behaves better for now as old one used to ... max junction temps I see are high 80s compared to often seeing 100+ degrees on old one that broke) 

 

How much sense would it make to try and get 6700 XT when it launches right now? I don't think it will be a big upgrade, but as an investment if I can get one of them?

I had an epiphany! Why not build GPUs to where "some assembly required" with socket-able components are used along with the HSF assembly. It would be like building a tiny DIY computer in of itself. Might help turn scalpers away, no? 🤔

 

Or, just limit one GPU per person at the store front 😩.

AMD will sell their AMD made cards at MSRP, it's the AIB's that would sell theirs at much higher prices, probably around 600-700SUD. IF scalpers are selling their RTX 3060 at 800USD here in my neck of the woods, it requires no stretch of the imagination to see that the RX 6700 would easily match that price or go even higher as it easily outperforms the RTX 3060 (supposed to fall between the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 based on AMD's slides).

 

AMD and its AIB's could release the RX 6700 XT in vast quantity, but the miners and scalpers would still snag a vast percentage of available cards, leaving us gamers to get what's left, that's just the reality of the situation right now.
