Should i downgrade from i7 9700k ro i5 9600k?

ok so i have a 9700k being cooled by nh u12s.. and under idle the temps are weird.. like sometimes 42.. then 53. then 66.. then back to 42... under p95 without avx it reaches 90.. i tried repasting thrice. correctly... my fans r running fine... opened side panel to see just a 3 degree drop in p95 temps.. its at stock all voltage etc set to stock.. i thought to buy a nh u12a. but some sais it wont make practically any difference..  as for d15.. its too big... and i dont want an aio due to leak risk.. in india warranty of aio dosnt cover other damaged parts .. i had an i5 8600k and it never behaved this weird... now this 9700k is driving my OCD wild..(i have clinical depression and mental health issues) and i am tired.. i am tempted to just keep this in a box and just buy a i5 9600k ... help

Besides the 9700K having no HyperThreading and only a 100MHz lower boost clock compared to the 9900K, they are not different at all, especially in terms of power consumption and thus heat generation. According to an LTT video concerning the 9900K, even the Dark Rock Pro and water coolers have a hard time keeping it below 80°C, so with 90°C in Prime95 you're relatively safe. During regular usage, the thermals will most likely be in check as Prime95 pins the CPU at 100%. Barely any normal program does that, so I wouldn't downgrade. There isn't any necessity.

nut i didnt mention 9900k, u might have misread 🙂 . i talked about wanting to downgrade from i7 9700k to i5 9600k (not 9900k)

Your temps are fine.  The idle temps vary because a PC doesn't just "idle" like a car.  It's constantly doing things in the background, watch the processes sometime.

Prime95 torches my 8700k on AIO to 94/95c, so 90c isn't a big deal.  P95 is a synthetic load that purposefully goes way beyond any normal workload, don't judge temps by it.  It's for stability purposes, not heat generation.

IMO, you should be fine (in your head) about the temps.  They're in line and you're overthinking this whole thing.

They are STILL virtually the same thing. CPUs without HyperThreading have only a negligible power consumption decrease. I have not misread that, I was knowingly comparing them.

Most motherboards at that time actually ran these things full throttle instead of actually falling back to the 95W TDP that they're rated at, that's why they get so hot because they have no issue blasting away 130-150W, even the 9700K. And that is rather difficult to cool. You can configure your BIOS to fall back to the factory Intel settings as it has originally been intended, in that case it'll just stop consuming unlimited power and it still runs at over 3 GHz all-core. Even a 10-core 10900K won't have issues being cooled by a U12S when you're running them at their intended TDP settings. Given the fact that your system doesn't appear to be throttling even under Prime95, I wouldn't worry about it all that much. It is fine. Could it be better? Sure. But is that a common result with that cooler and the CPU? Yes. Will it long-term harm your system? No, the system takes care of that by itself.

okk thanks.. also how much will it help if i get a nh u12a? i however dont want the d15 cz its too big.. looks odd af.. as for aio m too afraid to take risk... it has more heatpipes and bigger finstack...

Maybe a little, but I won't expect a miracle. Especially given the fact that the U12A with its two fans is also quite deep and rather expensive.

okk thanks bro

@Mahbub Go in the BIOS and undervolt your CPU if you want to reduce heat and power consumption. Intel typically sets the default voltage 50 mV to 100 mV higher than it needs to be set. Intel does this so they can guarantee long term stability but this extra voltage is not necessary.

Read this thread to get a better understanding of what is possible.
