Download not running at the speed it says it should

simpy

Every speed test that I do says my download is running from 300-400 Mbps. But when I download something, It definitely isn't downloading at 300 Mbps. More like 80-100. I'm connected to ethernet, does anyone know what I can do to help?

Is it downloading Megabit/sec or megabyte/sec? (One megabyte=8 Megabit) also, downloads are never as fast as the max theoretical speed.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Speedtest.net only lists it everywhere as "Mbps". I don't know which it is talking about. But considering your remark about the whole Megabit/Megabyte situation, it's probably referring to Megabits.

You can only go as fast as the weakest link in the chain.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Your theoretical download speed promised by your ISP will very rarely equal your speed in the real world, there are dozens of factors that impact your speed before it actually gets to your home. Things like the website you're getting your download from, noise on the lines of your house/apartment, how many other users are present, peak download hours, type of coax/fiber used, hardware limitations and much more can influence your actual speed.

Also, to get a rough idea what your download speed would be ideally, take the speed promised by your ISP (ie 400Mbps) and divide it by 8 to get your speed under ideal conditions. In this case it'd be about 50 MB/s. The fact that you're downloading above and beyond that is actually quite good, and might just be the fact that you need to convert between bits and bytes.

Former Comcast tech here, btw.
