Switching M.2 to NVMe: Is It Worth It?

Muhlis

Thinking about upgrading my M2 SSD (500 MB/sec read and write speeds) to an NVMe drive. Is it worth it, what kind of processes will be noticeably faster if I upgrade it to let's say an NVMe drive with 3000 MB/sec read/write speed?

Thanks.

m.2 is a form factor, an NVME is a type of storage device. I beileve you mean a m.2 sata ssd? The difference is there but usually isn't super noticeable and usually isn't worth it. I wouldn't go out of my way to switch to it.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Are you completely saturating your drive now?(Max read/write speeds) If so, yes. More than likely, no.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Rather than us listing off everything, why don't you tell us what's slow for you and you're hoping this upgrade would improve?

It isn't about slow or anything. I've been using my laptop for a year, it has only 256 GB SSD and running on SATA 3 speeds. It is fast, the difference with HDD is huge of course and I'm not complaining. Recently I found my laptop can support NVMe speeds. So I was thinking when I upgrade it with a bigger SSD, is worth it to spend a little more and get those high-speed NVMe SSDs.

I usually do 1080p/4K video editing (some heavy read/write operations), edit photos, sometimes I play games.

Oh, yeah. Normal Gen 3 NVMes shouldn't be too much more expensive if you're already upgrading. Just aim for something w/ DRAM cache and TLC and cost shouldn't go out of control.
