i7 6800K in 2021,worth it?

Hi guys.

I was looking for used CPU to replace my Xeon 2640 V3 and I suppose my best bet would be 6800K which here sells for 130 euros (cheapest price).

Yeah I know that 2600X outperforms this CPU,but I already have X99 MoBo,so I can't switch to ryzen.

I see this CPU boost to only 3.8 GHz so I'm not exactly sure how big of an upgrade would it be compared to my Xeon.

Besides it has huge TDP which I'm concern in colling it up.

Now something that I wrote confused me is that 6800K is locked to OC,I thought "K" models are unlocked.

So is it worth it to upgrade my rig or just forget about it?

K is unlocked. Unless the motherboard doesn't support it.

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

Depends on the quality of the chip, how good your cooling solution is and also your motherboard.

Would be fine for stock clocks, not going to get any real OC with that though. You haven't said which x99 MOBO you have but given x99 is the top chipset I'd assume its got decent VRM cooling and is unlikely to hinder your OC potential.

I heard about this like a year ago. 

"Intel disabled overclocking on Broadwell-E due to security issues, you could be facing this issue."

 

you can overclock with older bios from around start of 2018 tho.

also should use older windows version from start of 2018 too.

for what? that is the only chipset that supports the 6800k. z97 only supports up to 6700k.

And I'd need to flash to newer BIOS.

With this Xeon I do have more cores but with lower clock.

What is his all core boost to?

I couldn't find that info.

Yes, that is a mistake.

I owned a i7-6800K for ~3 years overclocked....until it died...and gave it back to Intel.

I actually had my i7-6800K running with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO for the first 1.5 years?

CPU was running an all-core OC of 4.0 GHz with the cooler.

Under normal usage and gaming loads, and occasional benchmarking / computing, the CPU cooler held up fine.

You'll have no issues -- even if you overclock.

I was using an ASUS X99 Deluxe II motherboard.

Your ASUS Rampage V Extreme if a step above that, IMO.

The Rampage V Extreme is ADVERTISED as a monster OC board...

130 Euro = $200 Canadian.

I can't say for the European market, but $200 isn't bad; I could try to bring it down to $180 ~ $150 CAD (100 ~ 120 Euro).

This CPU, brand-new at the time was ~$441 USD.

I bought mine *on sale* for $499 Canadian = 327 Euro.

 

Rampage V Extreme should support USB BIOS Flashback.

Either use your Xeon to update the BIOS... use the USB BIOS Flashback option (e.g. update the motherboard without CPU in the socket).

 

CPU *officially* supports up to DDR4-2133. This is without XMP enabled.

XMP = Overclocking Memory.

XMP enabled, this CPU can support MUCH faster memory.

I was running DDR4-3000 CL14, no problems.

 

Same thing how Intel rates the i7-10700K up to DDR4-2933...but people run DDR4-3600+ with XMP enabled.

Should be. If your CPU isn't happy with your 212 it will let you know right away. Intel 6 cores.. beastly heat when you wind them up.
