MSI Optix MAG274QRF turns on/off on windows login screen?

Mark Kaine

So overall I'm pretty happy with this monitor but this is really annoying, when I boot the pc it turns off then on during the bios / logo screen and then *again* on the windows log in screen - for about 1-2 seconds... is this something these screens do or does this sound like a defect?

I mean it's really annoying, and impractical (for troubleshooting etc.)

I'm using display cable, btw.

is there any adaptive refresh rate or something like that on? Also are you running at it's max resolution?

I think this monitor is slower to display picture when it goes into sleep mode, I have a Philips 190S7, It's from like 2007, it only goes into sleep mode when there is no video input for like 3sec

well yes, of course that's the point of the monitor, adaptive refresh rate, 1440p, and it's currently set to 120hz (goes up to 165)

I mean why would that be the reason to turn on and off *twice* during boot?

well it does almost look that way, but on the windows log in screen? there's a picture, why would it go into sleep mode, maybe I would want to, actually log in? Seems like a defect to me, hence I'm asking.

Nope, I can try, but even then that wouldn't really be a solution would it?

But I see, could be display port (have been *very* sceptical about this anyhow) so I'm trying with adaptive sync off and also with HDMI cable I guess (hdmi goes up to 144hz /1440p so that would be a solution, *if* it's the display port / cable)

It can be as like in changing display resolution in settings the screen will go blank for a few seconds, this is what I think is happening.

That or the display is malfunctioning or you messed up some setting. Also I hope you installed the drivers for it

what drivers!

gpu drivers are literally display drivers, of course they're installed but this isn't a gpu problem, my old monitor never did this... can only be either the monitor itself or windows not handling "exotic" resolutions, or ARR properly... 🤔

If my old hunk of junk VGA monitor had drivers you bet your fancy monitor also has.

in device manager find your monitor and update the driver from there driver>update driver> browse my computer for drivers> let me pick.... > have disk; and locate the .inf file that you downloaded earlier

thanks, yeah I installed it, still same thing though:

turn pc on > monitor goes on > then the boot logo appears > monitor goes off > then on > windows log in appears > monitor goes off (because???) > monitor goes on again > I may now use my computer > great!

it's really not so bad but it's annoying, and not 'seamless' at all (and I can see it making troubleshooting a pain in certain circumstances)

well I feel this maybe really is some dum energy saving setting or something... I don't know, it's just definitely not normal - unless it is? but I don't find much on google, doesn't seem to be widespread...

well I'll try with different cable and without adaptive sync just to be sure, will update then, and thanks for your help so far, at least I have some ideas now.

BTW also try looking inside the app for settings (same link as for the driver but in the utility section of the page)
