It's sad because almost any meaningful upgrade for my 1070ti's (Turing or Ampere) would also be a better gaming card than my 1080ti FTW3 in my main pc..... BUT I NEED TO FOLD. 

The only Pascal card I still have folding is a 1070Ti.  It’s yielding on average 1.3MPPD on a 120W power limit on Linux so they’re still relevant.

 

You could always pickup a new GPU for gaming and put the 1080ti in with the 1070ti GPUs.

 

I’ll likely pick up a 3080 and/or a 3070 to replace the 1070ti and 1660ti but from what I can tell reading between the lines the new GPUs aren’t that efficient and aren’t much of an uplift over the 2000 series.

For me personally, the 3000 series is between 20w - 30w per million points more efficient than the 2000 series, depending on the card.

seems to depend on the model, many of the OC models out of box are pushing clocks that are well past the point of efficiency, kind of like what AMD did with the 5700xt. I'm sure that with tuning they're quite efficient assuming the bios/drivers allows you to down clock them enough. I know at bottom power target with no frequency tuning the 5700xt is quite efficient

on a side note I just managed to score an Asus 3070 KO card off Amazon today after missing the VAG event earlier so... huzzah
it's not even for me, it's for a friend and coworker that's desperate for something better than their RX 580 and I was doing him a favor keeping an eye out

Interesting on p13446 under Linux I'm seeing:

2070s 2.9-3.1MPPD, 170W Power Limit (default 215W)

2070a 2.5MPPD, 145W Power Limit (default 185W)

2060s 2.5MPPD, 140W Power Limit (default 175W)

2060  1.9MPPD, 145W Power Limit (default 190W)

 

So assuming equal scaling and a "Windows Tax" of (1.9/1.79) or 6.1% the 3070 would yield 2.94MPPD under Linux.

 

At $800Cdn for a 3070 XC Gaming versus the $820Cdn I paid for the 2070s XC Hybrid's it looks like the 3070 might be a wash for folding in my use case especially if they have to run at higher power to achieve the same performance.

 

TechPowerUp shows the BIOS on the 3070 XC Gaming as 220W with an adjustment range of -55 to +20% or 99W to 264W

Small accomplishment for the March folding event, but I am pleased that with some nudging of settings I have now cleared 12m ppd off my 3 cards in windows. Fingers crossed I can get my waterblocked soon.

That is stock. I have had it running all night and seems to be breaking in lol 

now I’ve had it at an 80% power limit I do need to check what wattage it’s a pulling lol. And currently it’s on the normal bios. I will monitor wattage today and tonight I will swap it to oc bios and see what it does

 

so according to video card it is running at 167 to 168 watts. Gpu clock is at 1920 MHz 

so looks like 3070 is about equal to 2070s

I see. I'm also getting 1.3m-1.4m on both 1070ti's (60% power limit, not entirely sure what the wattage is but 120 sounds right given total load at the wall is around 320)

So though NVidia made massive improvements in Ray Tracing and AI Inference performance the performance uplift for this series is not that great in our specific use-case. Perhaps explains why they changed the way they report FP32 performance

 

I miss AnandTech's Video Card reviews as they were about the only ones to at least test FP32 performance so a subjective comparison could be made. Apparently the lead reviewers house burnt down which sucks though.

Ugh, I'm so torn.  Once this event is over, I've got 4x 1070's and a 2080 Super I could theoretically sell for major bucks, but I'd have to re-attach their air coolers (or try to sell them already water blocked, I guess).  And that wouldn't even shut down my gaming rig, which is outfitted with a 2080 TI that I'ma keepin'.  With that money, I could justify paying scalper prices for a 3090 and fold with *that* instead.  

 

But that involves work and selling things and buying things and decomming two custom liquid loops and I think I'm happy with the ~5.5m ppd that the current arrangement gives me.  But at the same time, if I move now I would very likely be in a better position moving forward.  But even if I do sell, I probably won't have the gumption to put down 30 benjamins on the 3090, thus bringing my folding chops down to zero (I don't everyday fold on my main card since I don't want to fold long term with air cooling and don't want to risk bricking my main card by incorrectly water blocking it).
