by name depends on A LOT of factors.. especially going between win7 and win10 going by IP (or by a name that is resolved by your router's DNS server instead of netBIOS) is going to be a more reliable method. a few years back i ran into a very odd issue with my network shares where win7 and win10 devices sometimes wouldnt find each other. i resolved the issue by letting my router resolve the names, instead of letting the computers trying to find each other.

well there is your problem...

usb wifi dongles can be hilareously unreliable, they usually have terrible antenna's, they run stupidly hot, and they have a very small power target. (== also less signal strength)

Windows 10 remote desktop, why is it sometimes barely usable and other times just fine?

I swear sometimes in the same day, without changing anything, it works well and then 3 hours later i can't even log in.

Most of the time i need to click connect 3-10 times before it actualy connects

Now i'm trying and it just doesnt connect.

It's always the same message saying the computer might not be on the same network. That's non sense... it says that message and then 10 attempts later witin 30 seconds then it works ... sometimes slow, sometimes just fine, sometimes really really slow not usable...

Why is that happening? please, when it works it's useful and it actualy change the resolution because my 2 computers have not the same screen size.

I have 60mbps internet speed test on both computer and fast wifi cards on both, that's not the problem...

Maybe its because one computer has win7 and the other has win10 ?

i dont know.. never really had issues with RDP even in extremely weird setups...

this to me sounds like a network issue.. are you connecting by IP address or by name to these devices, and what does your network layout look like?

fast wifi cards on both

I suspect this might have something to do with it. If the wifi card is in some low power state, it might only check in with the AP every few seconds to see if there is traffic in-bound?

Are you using a VPN of any sort before logging in through Remote Desktop?

Also, the slow / unusable complaint, that CAN be network related.

If you lose data packets in between, or the internet speed is variable, it will cause those issues.

Due to this COVID-19, I'm usually working from home 20% ~ 30% of the time, and I remote into my work PC.

Slow / unresponsive issue happens if (at least for me):

  • Something is eating up network bandwidth (e.g. one of my other PCs is downloading / patching)
  • Weak wireless connection / signal strength (e.g. dropped packets).

No vpn

None of the computers are eating bandwidth, nothing runs at the moment and i can't even use it, it's super super slow.

I get 5 lines out of 5 full strenght wifi signal on both computers..

When i use ultraviewer it works fine, its not as smooth as the windows remote desktop when it works 15% of the time it wants to cooperate lol...

I prefer using win remote desktop, it works really well when it doesnt lag.

It might be my wifi card on one of the computer, i changed it to another usb port and it seems better, but i was using this port before and i changed it because of the same issue, like if i need to change the usb port from time to time...
