This is what I have:

 

Various cables and a HP 2009 P6367C computer with software/licenses.
A Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD loaded with Win7 Home Premium (oem).

A 16TB Seagate EXOS Drive along with 2x 5TB Seagate drives. *

A NVMe SATA adapter with 2x USB3.1 & 1x C ports.

A 512GB NVMe SATA3 card/drive.

 

* The 16TB is partitioned to match the other two 5TB drives exactly.

   These three drives ~"5TB" are being run under s/w Win7 Raid-0.
   The remainder of the 16TB ~"11TB" drive is backup.

 

   The three drives are being run Raid-0 for speed; Kontakt in Reaper.

 

Note: If the 16TB (new) goes down I will have to pull everything from
multiple other backup drives and reassemble (but not the point here).

 

 

What I want:

 

A NAS, 4K Video Editing, Windows 2019 Pro Server, and a Music Studio

Production PC / Software Development PC -- ALL IN ONE.

 

Bandwidth at my place is unmetered 20 Mbps/10 Mbps (down/up).

 

Once I get my "new" PC, it will NOT be hooked directly to the internet.

The old HP P6367C 2009 PC will be connected directly to the internet.

 

 

Everything else I plan to add at a later date as far as parts, the difference

being that ALL of the NAS Drives will be 16TB Exos Enterprise drives that

match the current Seagate drive that I recently purchased.

 

I will write my own NAS/Raid software.

Just don't. Segment this into individual machines for one (or maybe two) tasks. Otherwise when something fails, you'll lose all of those for the duration of the time it takes to fix, instead of just one/two. It's a lot harder to troubleshoot problems of OSes in VMs, as well.

Why not connect to the Internet? It makes it easier to keep the OS up to date and whatnot...

Just use TrueNAS or UnRAID or the like. It's a lot safer than trusting one's own abilities to code, IMO. ZFS in TrueNAS works really well. Or Storage Spaces in the Windows Server you wanted.

No GPU? Unless you're going for NAS/server first, you're gonna want something other than the IPMI for graphics out.

 

Also, that PSU is a little small for EPYC + a recent GPU. I would recommend sacrificing failover and getting a single, higher-power, reliable unit.

EPCY cpu are enterprise (data center) parts. PCPartPicker.com typically concentrates on desktop equipment.

 

If this is a personal system why the 4x10GbE NIC?

 

You might consider AM4 Ryzen 9 cpu with a motherboard that supports ecc. Although I think having multiple boxes makes more sense. 

 

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thank you for that. It just wasn't making any sense to me at the time. Yes, an enterprise server is very much what I am after. I have been spending $60/mo lately, and years earlier as much as over $300/mo for an online server with nothing really to show for it once I pulled the plug!

For local access, basically if friends need to do video editing and add video to music. LivingEdge Studios is a full-on music studio... writing thru arranging / composing and we even make our own CD diskcovers out of printed cardboard from scratch.  (perhaps not necessary right out the gate.)

You are probably right, although AM4 may be phasing out shortly. Should I at least upgrade the mobo to an ASRock ROMED8-2T for Gen4 compatibility? Will I then have to change my CPU from the EPYC7302P to something else?

I agree and I did notice that, but I posted the build from the parts list as recommended by Linus. I agree that a bigger power supply is going to be needed. Adding in just the EXOS drives gives something like:

So an extra 200 watts is probably required and a 1000 watt PSU is arguably needed. 5 / 10 / 6.3 are the different wattages of a single EXOS 16 TB drive depending on what that drive is doing at the time.

Never much really thought about it. I don't know what the ASRock ROMED8-2T board will support. I guess I will try and do editing with the server locally and see what happens with a 4k monitor hooked up to the mobo.

TrueNAS is a bit of a mess on the lines of Raid-6 (Z2, Z3). I see TrueNAS as a waste of disk drives in a semi-slow system. But, I might give them a go, perhaps. But that means that I would run Windows in KVM, which I have done in the past on other online servers and they worked great. We shall see.

It's a production server = no automatic OS up-to-date uncontrolled irritations.

I have no problem losing ALL temporarily, which shouldn't really happen -- not a concern.

 

I have had Windows 7 Home Premium since mid 2009. I have added and swapped various hardware, run varied-purpose software, and added service packs and critical updates. I've copied the entire system disk over to SSD and run that for years without any problems.

 

I also haven't had to put up with the Windows 8 & 10 stupidity locally and my Home Production PC has never let me down, except for the recent Kontakt "bloat" that has slowly brought it to its knees.

 

I will have to move away from Windows 7 to address all of the onboard memory on the new server. I will deactivate all server updates and keep Windows Server 2019 offline. Even though my servers in the past were all online, I also disabled automatic updates/restarts on them because I wanted ~99.99999% system uptime.

 

Microsoft is very, very bad at discontinuing technology, and later adding something similar and making you pay for it. They do things behind your back, don't say anything, and leave you in horror to discover what they did. Perhaps I should make the swap to Linux, but I really cannot see running KVM locally if I don't have to do so.

 

The best policy I have found is to lock down the production server so hard that even Microsoft and the OS can't mess with it. Get rid of automatic everything, disable services, run SAAS when necessary, and definitely get rid of all unscheduled restarts.

 

 

It's time for Microsoft to grow up, but it has been for years and they haven't. Why should they grow up now? If I wasn't writing code in Delphi I would probably make the switch to GCC C++ as the GCC compiler is way better than Microsoft C++ (per many online reads).

 

Linux is still not out of the question except for all of my Windows licensed software. But ALL of that (with the exception of music production, and 4k video editing software) can be run on my old Windows 7 Home Pro PC without a problem.
