I just realized I have gddr4 ram and a gpu with gddr5vram..

nelska

Is this ok or should I seriously consider upgrading my ram sticks? I have a b250 pc mate and the bios literally wont even let me raise the clock on them so i dont even get full speed out of them. thanks jw.

Specs of your PC?
Also, you have DDR4 RAM. That's what you have to use. You can't use DDR3, or DDR5 once it releases.

VRAM is different from RAM.

GDDR5 was out while DDR3 was around, and GDDR5X/GDDR6 is out while DDR4 is around. GDDR6/GDDR6X will likely be around while DDR5 is around, and GDDR7 might come in towards the end.

VRAM develops on a different scale than RAM, kind of like how Fahrenheit have different steps than Celsius.

Huh?  You seriously need to research a bit about PC stuffs 🙂

DDR4 is the current PC RAM module, DDR5 is the prior gen GPU RAM and we have DDR6(x) currently.

All is fine.

Even if you could get your hands on ddr5 ram and install it on your motherboard it wouldn't make much of a difference in terms of compability, or likely whatever you're talking about. DDR4 ram and gddr5/6 vram work fine together.

thanks was just wondering if i goofed up. yeh i have i7 6700 gtx960ssc 4gb vram. b250pc mate and ballistix 16gb ddr4 ram. 500watt psu. I am about to scrap the whole thing and am double checking over everything because i want to be even smartest about my next build but realized maybe i should round out all the ram but they dont make 5 in regular ram so i should be good. thanks!

hmm, interesting. Yeh, I want to upgrade the mobo so I can get full speed from my ram. I want to upgrade my ram sticks because I have 4x4gb instead of 2x16. I have an nvme but its 250gb and I want that a 1tb. I want a 650watt psu. I want AT LEAST a 1660super and AT LEAST an i7 with a k. It's a pretty healthy rebuild. but I wouldn't really see much from doing it.

I think you should go ahead and upgrade to ddr5 anyway.

Euhm I think you need to do a bit of educating yourself with systems as you have a lot of requirements that don't make well any sense for a balanced gaming setup really.

You have a lot of wants but before you do that you first have to figure out what you need. Is it just a pure general gaming system? Well then no need for an i7 and for sure no need at all for 32gb of ram.

I would just sell your system you have and start from scratch since you are well basically wanting to upgrade all but the case so might as well just sell your old one as a complete as that sells the quickest and you aren't stuck with the odd part then.

If you want to run your (system) RAM at full XMP speed, with Intel, either:

  • Need a Z490 motherboard or,
  • Get a 500-series motherboard -- Intel is allowing RAM overclocking on non-Z series motherboards with the 500-series (e.g. B560)

Upcoming 11th Gen Intel should come with extra PCI-E lanes (more than the current 16), so at least one NVMe M.2 slot is getting PCI-E bandwidth from the CPU.

For example, the Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Pro AC motherboard has a NVMe M.2 slot labelled as M2B_CPU.

However, with current 10th Gen CPUs, the slot does nothing; Gigabyte says its a reserved placeholder.

You DON'T need a K-CPU unless you are doing any CPU overclocking.

You don't need a K-CPU if you want to run your RAM at XMP -- that is a motherboard limitation restriction....which I said is lifted with 500-series boards.

You CAN actually start to buy some 500-series Intel boards now (e.g. Newegg I see you).

You cannot run your RAM at full speed BECAUSE of your B250 chipset based motherboard....again because B250 does not support RAM (nor CPU) overclocking.

As for the size of the NVMe SSD, you are absolutely correct.

250GB SSD for the OS / main drive is on the small side.

Considering you can now get a decent 1TB NVMe SSD for under $100 USD, no-brainer.

As for the RAM, do you NEED 32GB (16GB X 2) of it?

Otherwise, you can drop that down to 16GB (8GB X 2).

A motherboard with 4x memory slots will give you the option to go up to 32GB down the line (8GB X 4).

For the PSU, it will depend on what parts you will use eventually.

Say... i7-10700K + 16GB RAM + GTX 1660 Super. A good quality 500W ~ 550W is already plenty.

Say i9-10900K + RTX 3090. You would want something like a 850W.

If you are going to run a GTX 1660 Super, I would consider pairing it with something like an i5-10600 / 10600K / 10600KF instead of an i7 (or i9).

Or the 11th Gen equivalent ... i5-11600 ?

AMD Ryzen 3000-series and 5000-series is also an option.

They already have extra PCI-E lanes from the CPU to the 1st NVMe M.2 slot -- it's been a thing since the beginning...Intel is playing catch-up now.

There is already PCI-E 4.0 support -- that is coming with Intel 11th Gen release

Given speculations so far, 11th Gen Intel with either be on-par or still slightly slower than AMD 5000-series.

THAT SAID, grain of salt until the reviews hit the floor.

I don't understand what you're asking

they think mobo ram and gpu ram should be the same type. common mistake people make for some reason.

@OP as a rule of thumb, the gpu memory is always the fastest, most expensive available at time of release, whereas system ram tends to be one tier lower as its deemed good enough and no one wants to pay $500 for a 4GB ram stick anyway (which the then newest and fastest ram would probably cost)

Also your mobo probably won't support anything higher anyways, however you may be able to 'overclock' your system ram with XMP which is a bios setting (though that depends on the quality of your mobo and ram sticks)
