Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

My thoughts

So an updated ps vr headset? This is just an announcement and it does not go into details other than it exist and it coming. I would also like to note that they are working on a new controller along with this headset.

Honestly I’m surprised they didn’t announce this when the console was first revealed.  Your average consumer would notice the difference in VR between the  PS4 and PS5 waaay more than any of the other differences when given a side by side comparison. That being said the market for VR is still pretty small and in order for VR to really take off they’re going to have to make it both cheap and have a compelling library.  They can probably pull off the price part (just look at how much scalpers are making) but getting compelling games is going to be a challenge. At a minimum, they’re going to have to get ports of some of the bigger VR titles out there (Half Life Alyx, Boneworks) but they need to get their first party developers working on some exclusives for it to complete against stuff like the Oculus Quest.

Arch is better than Ubuntu. Fight me peko.

PSVR had the best screen at the time, the controllers are obviously old tech, but the first party attachments are pretty good for adding to the immersion. The only reason I still refuse to even considerer PSVR is because it only has the one camera. I have a cheap Windows Mixed Reality headset, the only cameras it uses are on the headset itself. If Sony added cameras to the headset to aid with the tracking, it could be a great VR setup. I still think anyone with a PC will skip right to anything else though, unless PSVR2 is made to be compatible with PC easily. I would happily dump my WMR headset for a relatively cheap option that worked on both of my boxes with an updated OLED display.

I have a PSVR and it is not too bad despite one camera. I’ve enjoyed using it as have my teenage girls. That is its arena and it works well at a decent price.

The new version sounds great. Will be good to see some dedicated controllers instead of the not very good move jobbies. It is a shame however it is still a wired headset, but I am guessing that is in many ways down to intended price point.

I have a Vive and PSVR, and to me they serve different parts of the market. Vive really comes alive when you do room scale content. PSVR is very static in comparison, so the single camera tracking isn't a negative in that sense. Without looking at the numbers I think PSVR was by far ahead of PC offerings in terms of mass appeal. Its limits are also its strengths. So it will be interesting to see where PSVR goes next.
