Need help fixing retro AMD 'gaming PC', possible motherboard failure / replacement [M2N68-LA]

So I got my old PC back from a friend who said he brought it to a repair shop, because it was 'slow' which I can confirm it was, even though it used to be *very* fast (1-2 minutes boot time) and they said it's something on the motherboard not worth repairing - so I'm gonna check if I see something, but it's likely I need a new mobo so I'm asking for suggestions / tips how to get one that's compatible or, preferably the same.

Thanks in advance.

I would slap in a SSD. I am not sure what could be a motherboard issue here, HDDs get slower over time and will fail.

Thats true but the repair guy said specifically something on the mobo is broken (I suspect capacitor or resistor or something)

Without proper diagnostics, I dont see how that can impact the "speed".

Well he said it's 'burned out' so I'm pretty sure I will find it (whatever is, my friend couldn't remember) so in all likelihood I'll need a new mobo - which is what I'm asking about (yes I know check ebay but maybe there are alternatives)

Does it boot? If so it's probably fine and just needs an ssd for some speed. Without first doing PROPER diagnostics there is legit no point in buying anything,

Keep in mind often a board for that system costs as much as that system so you might as well buy a core 2 or amd phenom pc again and spend the same amount of money basically.

yeah - it should boot... well idk why the guy said he saw something burned out tho? usually putting in a new ssd is exactly what those repair shops do as it's quick money...

as I said I'll check - if there is something damaged I should see it.

not saying that a ssd maybe wouldn't help but since he was at well known repair shop and they said it's the motherboard I think that's unlikely.

I just looked it up 15-35 euros...

but there are several 'revisions' so I don't know if I need exactly the same or if basically any am3 matx board would work?

PS: what's also weird anything I saw on ebay says 'ddr2' but the description on HP site says 'ddr3' so I may need a rather specific board. 🤔

First of all, what year are your parts from? curious since I am building a 2008 all-AMD system.

My suggestion is put in a SSD in addition to the fastest RAM clock and biggest modules the board supports.

If something on the MOBO actually is fried youll need a new one unless you have lots of experience soldering SMD and are OK with something breaking if you do it wrong.

Edit: is that an ASUS board, maybe AM2? looks like my ASUS M3N78-EM and has a veeery similar model num. if so those are easy to find on ebay for a couple bucks

Im pretty sure it's am3 unless the HP site is wrong...

and yes looks like Asus even though they don't call it Asus... 😅

yeah p sure I bought it in 2008.

why do you think there was no 'proper' diagnostics?

he apparently even checked the gpu...!

(although I cannot be certain what those markings really mean, or if they were always there - looks kinda 'freshly made' tho)

20210222_174825.thumb.jpg.d5d149513a2e1509b9f13ef8da14a5f7.jpg

And I have already found *three* capacitors (or whatever those blue ticking time bombs are called...) on the mobo that don't look so good..  here's one of them!

Actually I do... but it's not worth it really as soldering iron, parts, etc would probably cost more than the mobo!

if it was the gpu however, that would be worth it (those X1950 GT are freaking expensive)

Not even worth the time or money to replace caps IMO.

Its DDR2 board right?

I think they made like 10 variants of this board....

yeah i know - hence I need a new one... wouldn't any AM3 (?) MATX board work provided it fits?

and I'm not even sure what RAM this is, would be good to know...

Well its Hynix, by looking at it it looks like it's DDR2 555mHz, 512MB per stick.

When I get home from school I can post a picof my ASUS AM2+ board with nicer caps that is almost identical if you need?

Also is the io shield removable or is it holes cut into the back of the case? if the io shield is not removable that is bad and you'll have to get the same board again, if it is removable any MATX board fits

Alright, well I'll have to research that a bit as the HP site says it's AM3 and I'm not sure obviously.

Athlon II and Phenom II had both ddr2 and ddr3 memory controllers.

If the memory is DDR2, you need an AM2 or AM2+ motherboard which I'm 99% sure it's AM2.

Edit

However you could grab a ddr3 board and some ddr3 memory and still use the cpu.

In fact I have an Athlon II x4 640 thats done nothing for years. I think it came out of this same board actually, but can't remember exactly. I've had quite a lot of AM2 through AM3+ rigs.

Ah I see, yeah I'm pretty sure it's removable, looks exactly like my B350M shield...

I'm just gonna replace thermal paste of the gpu and then remove / clean the cpu / cooler - that's at the latest when I should know what board / cpu it is.

Cause 'AMD 64 live™' doesn't really tell me much! 🤷🏼

I see, well I even still should have the RAM package so that should tell me what the RAM is, plus the cpu hopefully has a name too! 😂

Would this one fit?

MSI MS-7312 VER. 1.0

AM 2

DDR2 SDRAM

edit: oh I didn't see that... I almost figured tho.

So is this AM2+ then? And I could still use my old RAM before upgrading?

That board is AM2.

Will not support Athlon II chips or Phenom II chips.

Will support AM2 Athlon sempron. Not even sure if it will support all 1st gen Phenom chips.

And why would an AM2 Chip not fit in an AM2 board? I thought we already established it is an AM2 CPU, we just didn't know which one exactly.

So this MSI board would work and no ddr3 shenanigans I suppose...?

clearly says AM2, also so much for factory thermal paste application - wouldn't surprise me if that's the reason why it was 'suddenly slow' although I still don't like how some of the capacitors look...

OK see where that sticker says AM2 Athlon processor. See how it does NOT say Athlon II... It's an AM2 motherboard. Not AM2+.

So Athlon 4000+ 5200+ 6400+ are AM2 processors.

Athlon II 640 x4, like the one sitting on my desk is AM2+ not AM2.

Any ways....

I have no idea what cpu you actually have. You have only taken pictures of thermal paste on a random processor. Is it a 4000+ like in the sticker?

Next time you're at the autoparts store, you can pick up some wet sanding paper. 1200 grit up to 2000 grit can shine that heat sink right up. Just some burnt oxidation I would guess.

Cool. It's a brisbane core. 65nm. Some of these chips clocked about as well as the windsor 90nm chips.

And s939 had dual cores. Opteron 165 comes to mind.

ah, good tip, but I'm not concerned about the cooler - looks ok, what I meant is if there's so much stuff that looks burned it must have gotten hot and the cpu might be damaged and might be the problem after all... but also I wouldn't be surprised if that's simply why the pc was so slow, with basically almost no thermal paste it would throttle like hell I guess. : o

So I think I'll try getting the MSI board - it somehow looks good and is only 20 bucks - with some CPU and cooler iirc... (so I'd have spare parts lol)
