Audible controversy (Amazon how could you?!!)

1 hour ago, JLO64 said:

After doing a quick search, Apple Books takes a 30% cut of all sales (say what you will about Apple but they’re consistent).  The issue is that they’re not an option for people who don’t have an Apple product which is a significant portion of customers.  Additionally, I think you’re overestimating how much the average person really cares(or thinks about) the the financial situation of the creators behind their favorite works. I really do think the issue is the HUGE brand recognition that Audible has which has enabled it to dominate the space over time.  That has enabled them to enforce the exclusivity contracts which would also deter any other potential rivals from going against them.  I don’t think it’s out of the question to launch a competing service(floatplane? jk), but at best it would be a small service operating within a (growing) niche dominated by Audible.  Honestly at the end of the day I’m just hoping that the antitrust and anti monopoly investigations happening right now in the US against Big Tech cover this part of Amazon but I’m not holding my breath for that. (Plus Jeff Bezos apparently donated a boatload of cash to Biden’s presidential campaign soooooo...)

That's quite likely true given that no true competitors have emerged, but I feel like the equation is backwards: People don't give a crap what they use to listen to books.  If Penguin Publishing and other publishers started exclusively publishing to some other service, Audible would shrivel and die pretty much immediately. In short, I go where Brandon Sanderson goes.  I don't curate my book collection based on what Audible spoon feeds me.

Not that this is good business practice by Amazon but at least if I want to sell an audiobook I can theoretically go elsewhere. Not so with an iOS app.

Just create a simple ecommerce website and an app (I hate Audible's app anyways), secure a few publishers to put their library onto it by not categorically fleecing them, and let the money roll in.

What happens when no publisher will let you use their stuff because you don't pay them enough to secure the rights to books they didn't write?

AHHH!  Good point.  We're not talking publishers; we're talking independent authors.  So yeah, you can't use a publisher's clout to change things.

@Nena Trinity While the link you provided does use Audible, it's ACX not Audible...which does change things up quite a bit.  While Amazon still owns ACX and Audible, ACX acts as the publisher and Audible acts as the distributor.  In this case ACX is the one that is giving the 40% cut, which also includes on things like iTunes

It's ACX, and it applies on sales to iTunes as well by the looks of things.  Still terrible, but an important distinction (as in it makes it a worse since it feels more like collusion)

Well ACX does cover iTunes, audible and amazon sales...so I would imagine that it covers the majority of the audience...I know there's still Google, which does offer slightly more fair rates (but still only 50%) but I'd imagine Audible and iTunes covers over 60% of the audience

That's a lie. You can get 99% of same apps on Android phones. So, you do have an option. People keep perpetuating this lie that with iPhone you somehow don't have a choice. No one forces you to buy iPhone. No one forces you to use Apple TV+ or whatever it's called. When you buy Android you also don't get much of software support beyond 2 years either. That's a pretty crappy "choice" too. Yet people take it anyway. If you don't like iPhone or their policy, then go with Android.

Yeah, it's terible. The only good thing is that you can download a book, switch accounts, and the downloaded book is still there. And that's a very small thing.

I could use some help with this!

I said iOS apps. As in, apps that run on iOS. If you have an iOS phone you need iOS apps. Why do you have to go out of your way to twist the obvious meaning of a sentence just so you can call it a "lie"?

47 minutes ago, RejZoR said:

Answer this simple question: can you or can you not install an app outside the app store on your iphone without jailbreaking it and voiding the warranty?

48 minutes ago, RejZoR said:

What if you want to? Why does it need to come with the added baggage of only being allowed to buy apps from Apple directly? When the market is divided between a grand total of TWO platforms you should realize people can't choose what they want, they choose what they dislike the least.

50 minutes ago, RejZoR said:

Funny how you can debunk your own point literally the sentence after you made it.

51 minutes ago, RejZoR said:

Again, what if you don't like Android either? Just because Android has an objectively superior app distribution system doesn't mean all the rest of it is going to suit you. It's absurd to argue that choosing one of two platforms means you 100% endorse and accept everything that comes with it, even if it's something as blatantly anticonsumer as only allowing iOS users to buy apps from Apple. Antitrust suits have succeeded over MUCH less than this.

@Sauron

I'm not gonna reply to that absurd multi quote block. What excuses? I'm not making any excuses! You know what I did when i was fed up with all the Google bullshit and tracking trash and shit privacy policies as well as absolutely pathetic updating software support on Android? I went with Apple. Because of the two, it's less of a crap for my needs. You don't like Apple, and if you don't like Android, well tough luck. Pick the lesser evil like I have and stop blaming Apple for Android being an absolute turd. And stop excusing and defending Android just because you can sideload shit on it or use a 3rd party app store filled with even more shit than on GooglePlay itself or because you can flash garbage 3rd party ROM's with even less support than official ones that can only be installed through ridiculous process of phone unlocking that fucks up any chance to do any kind of banking on it without dicking around with Magisk. I've gone through all that and it didn't make a case for Android at all. It just made me hate it even more. So now I'm on iOS and god I love it. It might not be able to sideload apps, use shitty 3rd party app stores, flash other ROM's, but why would I even want that when everything that Apple offers literally "just works". And they even bother to deliver major updates for 5 frigging years. You kinda stop giving a shit about not being able to do all those absolutely useless things when phone actually works well for a change without me having to do PhD about it. But Android fanboys just can't and never will understand it because they are so focused into their bullshit sideloading and garbage ass ROM's coz no one realyl gioves a shit about any of that apart from those 15 geeks who then praise those things to heavens.

Sure there are few things that bother me with iOS, but it has so many other great traits I can easily just ignore them. Doing same on Android was simply impossible because of Google itself which is like a parasite on ALL devices. And pathetic sad software support, which is just the same on ALL devices. Oooooooh so much choice. Who gives a crap about choice when all you can chose from is all the same crap.

As a person who has been using audible a lot over the past 2 years (using the 2 books a month plan), if I where to jump ship what are some other good platforms.
Things I like is the monthly credit system so I can get lone/big/new books for the same price monthly (about $11 per book)
I will not loss my collection from moving because all of my audiobooks are downloaded and managed by my plex server.

I think I only returned one book through audible (oops sorry)

if you want to annoy me, then join my teamspeak server ts.benja.cc
